Jerry can

I decided to mount a jerry can for a bit of extra gas for a trip down the pacific coast highway from San Francisco to Santa Barbara. Even though my 2021 DL650A XT gets great gas mileage, there’s a long stretch through Big Sur that if memory serves me right has no gas stations, also being overly cautious doesn’t hurt. The mount cost me about $25 from Home Depot to make, here’s what I used:
One 3/4x8” black iron pipe
Two 3/4” black iron tee’s
Three 3/4” black iron plugs
One 3/4” flat abs plug
Two 6x40mm socket screws
Pack of 1/4” washers and 1/4” neoprene washers, so here it is:

Looks good 👍
Where did you buy the Jerry can and the mount, and how much was it, if you can share the part number or Link, pls, thx
I had a hard time finding one I wanted (black) it took about 2 months of online searching. It finally popped up on Amazon, here’s the link: osea 5L/1.3 Gallon Portable Water... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QC953YV?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Your call, of course, but just FYI, I'm pretty sure federal law prohibits putting gasoline in anything other than "approved" containers (which must be marked as such for everyone's safety, as well as have all the usual annoying flow-control nozzles). A situation like you have could, for example, put first responders at risk after a crash if they aren't aware of what's in the container.

On the plus side, it might have the advantage of reducing theft risk ...

The can is marked “Danger flammable” on the side I have exposed. It says “Long Haul Gasoline” on the other. Good looking out though.

My bad, I saw "Portable Water" in your post. I have no idea how they square that with what's embossed on the side ...

Anyway, nice mount!
Thanks! Ya the title and description says water, which is why it didn’t come up when I was searching. I bought it back in April, I even messaged them they should include “Gas can” in the title for search purposes and they still haven’t changed it :ROFLMAO:
I see that your container also comes in red. Not sure that I would want a black fuel can.
Yellow for diesel, blue for water, red for gasoline, and green for oil are just such great and unmistakable labeling.

Ingenious mount. Looking at that I am scratching my head how those fittings go together,,...Do the bolts that hold it on go in from behind to attach it, or through the Tee?
NFW😯.....but it's your life mate!!
Sure hope you never go down on your left side.
There are lots of gas stations along Big Sur. The longest stretch is less then 50 mi.

@shinobigami ...if you have some pipe and fittings left over maybe you should build some "MadMax engine crash guards ?" ;) who needs to pay thousands to SW Motech, OM's and others, if we have Home Depot :)

The 3/4” iron plugs are threaded tight on the backside and I drilled through to allow me to bolt it down.

The top case is far wider, if I went down on my left the can would be untouched. I had this rigged up on my previous bike and that was the case, although I didn’t have to make the mount.

my guess is that the "mass / weights of those pipes and fittings + the gas" will over time break the two bolts attached to the motorcycle, or something on the motorcycle will give...vibrations on the motorcycle will even fatigue metal...like this AUX light bracket

Possible, not that worried about it, feels extremely sturdy for the application I’m using it for. I loaded the crap out of the bolts with alternating stainless steel and neoprene washers where I could.

I'm with you. Unless the OP puts some welds on the U-bolts and threads to keep the U-bolts from hinging down and rotating the fuel cell over the chain or rear wheel. Those rubber piece on the Fauxtopax mount will compress and coupled with the vibration of the bike will slide in short order.

I've tried using the crash bar mounts for LED POD that have the rubber inserts. At first, they are tight but after a few days the rubber compresses and the light move if you bump them.

YMMV,
