I have a few questions for the Florida troopers. I am going on a trip with family to central Florida. We will be leaving Jacksonville and doing a loop down to Tavares, Mt. Dora and Howie-in the hills, then up to Ocala and back to Jacksonville. If you have any interesting things to see or great local places to eat, I would like to hear your input.

fl trip

Are you riding or driving? On A1A at Flagler Beach pier I like the Funky Pelcian, good fish fingers and it's right on the water. At Orange City south of DeLand is Blue Spring State Park. The Manatees come there in the winter for the warm water, very interesting, 6 bucks per car. In Deland on hwy 17 & 92 the Fish House has good fish and shrimp 8 or 9 bucks at lunch. Oakwood has the best baby back ribs I have ever had, they have 4 locations, I go to the one just north of Leasburg on 27-301. In Weirsdale Eatons Beach Bar and Grille has great food, it's off 25 just north of hwy 42. The Glass Bottom Boats are in Silver Springs, I haven't been there since it became a State Park. On the Square in Ocala Harrys has very good food with a New Orleans flavor.
There are some good rides in those area's, if riding I give you those. Give me a shout if you need more details on anything. Have a good time. Dave

Some of the best roads in the state are in that area. Mt. Dora is a great place to find good eats. Just walk around and you’ll find something. Check out Yalaha Bakery in the Howie-in the Hills area.

Thanks ya'll!
Riding bikes of course! Perfect weather for it. Mid 70s in Jax to low 80s in Mt. Dora. And in December! Gotta love the south! :hurray:
Forestrom: Would like to see the route you mentioned.

fl ride

I don't have a route, but some good rides in your area's. South of Flager off A1A turn right on High Bridge Rd, take a left on Walter Boardman, and a left on Old Dixie Hwy and follow through the Tomaka State Park to Hwy 40. Great ride with a canopy of trees over the road in places. Hwy 42 between Wiersdale and just west of Deland is a good road. I use it to go to Daytona from Ocala, it takes a while longer but is more intresting than Hwy 40. My favorite ride around Ocala is off of Hwy 42, take SE 182nd Ave north, there is a flashing yellow light there. When it dead ends turn left and follow 314A back up to Hwy 40. From there you can come back Hwy 40 or stay on 314A to 314 and turn left to come back to 40 and Ocala. In the Howey area 455 and 561 are nice rides. Have fun

Absolutely this! It looks like Florida probably looked hundreds of years ago. Except for the road, of course. Huge old overarching trees, wetlands, all the things that make Florida a beautiful place. Well worth going out of your way for.

Also, if you're going down A1A, there's a little oceanside place called HighTides at SnackJack's that's just great. They also always have fantastic custom sweatshirts there. When I used to go to BikeToberFest and Bike Week they were always a stopover for me. I used the excuse that I was cold and needed a new sweatshirt, but the food and atmosphere are the real draws. Try to sit on the oceanside porch if you can.

If you haven't made the ride yet, be VERY certain to stay at the posted speed in Howie in the Hills. It's a notorious speed trap. I have NEVER gone through there without seeing a radar car. I make it a point to never spend a dime in that town.
