I noticed a drain plug sized bolt on the bottom of the engine of my 1000. An allen wrench would remove it. What is it?

Echo,

It's access to an oil galley (passageway). The drain plug is down lower and is removed with a regular six point socket or wrench.

I've seen plugs like this on other engines before. Some were just oil galleys and others included a check valve to keep some pressure in the lubrication system after engine shutdown.

Do you have a pixture of the SL350? Thats would be nostalgic for me.

If that allen bolt has a valve behind it its probably a PRV. It would be designed to maintain a constant oil pressure regardless of viscosity (like when you start it cold)
