Being in the Auto industry for over 37 years I have very much believed in it since the top Tier Standards were created by the Auto Manufacturers. I always use it unless there simply is no other choice.

I don't recall ever seeing third party tests so interesting to read this:

I was in the import car repair business in various capacity's for over 25 years.
I saw the results Years ago when doing various motor repairs on everything from Mercedes to Mazda rotary engines... Much cleaner w/ the top tier fuels.
The same applies to Anything using gasoline.

I run cheap gas mostly but I do run a high quality fuel system cleaner through all my vehicles about three times a year. Not sure if that gives the same results or not.

Wish the test showed pics of the carbon. If it's just a few specks then 19 times more still isn't that much carbon but it's nice to know that there is a difference assuming their test is real world.

What's better: Having your fuel system and engine continuously cleaned by additives recommended by Auto Manufacturers and designed to work with the engine or cleaning it a few times a year with potentially harsh chemicals that many manufactures recommend against?

Thing is, suzuki suggest 91 octane gas straight up, no additives.
Is all that filler stuff better for the engine? Perhaps.
Is it recommended by the manufacturer? Nope.

Would i prefer only getting more gas, which is what i need to run my bike in the end? Kinda.


Btw, regular is 1.25$/liter here, big price drop!

Yeah our price in Ontario went up dramatically thanks to the idiot PM.

From Top Tier website: "Ten of the world's top automakers, BMW, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Navistar, and Audi" got together to create these standards."

Top Tier has nothing to do with regular vs Premium gas. All gasoline sold for Motor vehicle use has additives and all modern engines need the additives. Tougher emission standards meant better additives are required but were not mandated which is why the manufacturers got together on this.

I don't know what filler stuff you are talking about?

I'm not impressed with AAA's test parameters.

100 hours = 4000 miles = 19 times the carbon buildup on the test engine or engines. Was there more than one engine?

Concluding that 1000 hours = 40,000 miles = 190 times the carbon buildup of regular fuel.

I'm not buying it, some carbon can burn off depending on buildup and how you drive and type of engine being tested. An engine with 80,000 miles wouldn't necessarily have 380 times the carbon buildup as their test engine.

To convince me i'm going to need to see a many more test parameters like 2, 4, 6 & 8 cylinder engines being tested. I remember many years back some motors being horribly carbon choked and others not so much. I can't say what fuel was being burned other than most of those engines would of had leaded fuel for at least a portion of the time back then. I think there were some pretty crappy engine designs back in the day that promoted carbon buildup no matter the fuel. I'm not convinced based on this one study...but I could be wrong.:grin2:

I use Top-Tier Detergent gas whenever I can. Most name brand gasoline is top-tier. I wasn't sure if my local Kroger or Speedway gas was top-tier so I called their distributor. Yep, both top-tier. My car's manual says to use top-tier, if not, use their fuel cleaner every 7,500 miles or 12 months. The cleaner I use and that makes it for my car manufacturer is Chevron Techron Complete Fuel System Cleaner. As for the bike, the only time I use the cleaner is when I've done a trip and ran a lot of unknown stuff.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but ‘Top Tier’ is a privately administered program for fuel standards, where suppliers must go through very expensive testing and also pay licensing fees to be able to label their products ‘Top Tier’.
My understanding is than many companies choose not to pay-up to enroll in this program, even though their fuels might meet the Top Tier quality standards (similar situation as JASO standards/testing for oils).

In any case, I don’t know about the US, but all gas here in Canada must contain a certain level of detergent and additives to help prevent buildup, possibly putting it close to Top Tier standards.
To be honest, I’d be more concerned about ethanol content... that shit can be quite corrosive.

The standards were federally mandated in 1995. There have been a lot of emission changes since.

Automobile Manufactures setup Top Tier so that the additives met the demands of modern engines and later emission standards.

Carbon build up pre-unleaded would burn out much more easily. Since then there are deposits that form that are much harder to burn out. This is why better additives are needed.

You can't buy straight gasoline. It isn't sold at any pumps. All gas has additives. Your engine would not last very long without it.

Better additives are better than poorer additives.

It looks like the cost of getting the Top Tier stamp of approval falls to the additive companies. Retailers pay an annual fee, which is described as 'minimal', and then just have whatever terminal they get fuel from mix the top tier detergent package in when they load their trucks.

There are more Top Tier brands than you might think.

I can't imagine that a retailer would waste money putting a detergent package in their gas at a level that would qualify as Top Tier if they weren't able to capitalize on it by advertising it as Top Tier.

Welp, i'm not an expert in the matter, that's for sure.

I seem to recall a couple places in the us that didn't have fancy crap, not even ethanol at the pump, can't recall which...

All i'd like is affordable gas, they can keep the 25 added ingredients that boost prices.

I don't know about other additives, but there is one source about 20 miles from me that sells E0 gasoline. I use it in the winter, along with fuel stabilizer, because I might only get out on the bike once a month.

In Canada V-Tom who sells Top Tier fuel? I remember at an auto show in Toronto talking to a Pfaff Porsche guy who said he thought Esso gas was crap but Shell gas was the best.

Years back I did a job for a fellow recently retired from the fuel distribution business up in Kamloops area. What he said was all the fuel for the different companies came out of the same tanks and was the same product. The only difference was the additive packages each company added to the tanker. The pumps at most stations now dispense from one nozzle. When you buy premium fuel you start off with a hose and piping full of regular. If you grab half a tank full how much regular did you put in. A litre?(10%)
