I have an 07 wee and over the winter or prolonged storage i keep my bike plugged into a battery tender JR. I replaced my stock battery last year with a maint free battery from advance autoparts. I have been noticing that if my bike is parked outside 30-40 deg (5 hours) that it barely starts as if the battery has lost charge or is it the starter going bed drawing way too much power?
if the weather is a little warmer it starts a little faster. at idle the voltage is just over 14 volts so i know my stator is working fine. when i check the battery after riding the voltage holds around 12.7 volts after a few hours. i do know that typically my engine will start slower in colder weather, but the first 30k miles i never had this issue. i now have 36k.

is it possible my battery just isn't the best quality?
what is the CCA of the stock oem battery?

also does anyone have any experience w/this battery?

It's not the starter drawing too much power from going to bed.:green_lol: Did you use a generic charger/ battery tender? If so it probably over charged the battery and burned out a couple cells lowering the charge it can hold. :yesnod:

i used a "battery tender JR" brand not the chaep harbor freight copy. when i set the battery up I let the battery sit for 10 hours, then charged with a 1.5 amp/hr trickle charger for the time stated in the snstructions.

I used the same battery tender on a bike all winter some years ago.The battery was completely dry the next spring.
I don't trust them anymore.I just charge once a month now.

Dare I say one more time that AGM battery technology is different than the older lead acid. You can read about them at MF battery technology You say "when I set the battery up" which I interpret to mean that you commissioned it, the article above will possibly explain why the battery has failed. The battery should have a warranty on it, and if push comes to shove, you should be able to get another one since you followed the instructions explicitly. Dare I say again that these MF AGM batteries need a SMART charger to commission and maintain them. I see that you used a charger that claims this ability. You may have just got a dud battery. Some of the more expensive SMART chargers will tell you that a battery is a dud or has reached it's life span. I have the original battery MF in my 07, and it still passes a load test. Here is some good info on battery testing http://autorepair.about.com/library/weekly/aa101604c.htm

To answer these questions; The CCA of the OEM is 10a.
It is possible you got a dud. Most batteries manufactured as MF are good quality.
The Motobat has two sets of output/input terminals. That could be advantageous. The price is good.
Did your original battery suddenly quit, or did you just decide to replace it?

my original battery died after sitting for a few months in the bike not being used. I recharged it , but it never really came back to it's full potential so I changed to a new one. I've set up many batteries and never had this issue before especially w/this bike. it's only on cool days that i notice the bike starts slow. or starts, but just barely before the compression of the cylinder sends the piston back the other way either because the battery is low or the starter is drawing too much power after the fuel pump runs for a second.

once the bike is hot and running i have no issues. i could do errands around town and start stop many times without issues.

Read the voltage when cranking. Mine is as follows:
Morning voltage 12.7
Key on voltage 11.9 (lights on)
Cranking voltage 9.6 to 10.2 depending on cold or warm
Voltage after start 14.2 to 14.4

I have a Battery Bug monitor and it tells me my battery is at 60%...when it drops to30% the monitor will display a warning and at 10% it will give sound an alarm warning me to replace the battery. I expect at least another year based on this information and my K7 battery is original.

Somehow that sounds like something else??? What oil viscosity are U using? Can you do a voltage check across the battery terminals as the starter is trying to start the bike under the conditions U described? Possibly your starter switch is not passing full voltage due to contact failure/erosion/dirt. i have been running mobil 1 10w40 motorcycle oil. to answer your question bob. here's what i did over the weekend: thursday afternoon I was in my local motorcycle shop (springfield motorsports) and I asked the parts dude whom gives me a nice discount about what batteries they carry and what was reliable. he mentioned bikemaster platinum. they are setup at the factory and reliable. so I purchased a new bikemaster platinum battery 87.00 out the door and I put it in my bike there in the parking lot. the bike fired up way better than what the advance auot battery ever did even on a warm day. when i arrived home i placed my bike on the battery tender JR until bed time approx 3pm-11pm. i unplugged the tender and went out friday am where the temps were in the high 30's. the bike fired right up as if the battery was being jump started. funny thing is that the advance auto battery reads almost 13 volts sitting on the bench, maybe a load test would prove it to be defective?

Yep, a normal looking open circuit voltage does not necessarily mean it's good.
It probably has a higher than normal internal resistance and a load test would reveal that.

i took the advance auto battery to the store where they load tested it and told me that it was a good battery. i later took it to another location and they told me it was defective and offered to replace it even though the warranty was only 90 days from date of purchase which was last summer. i'm still using the platinum battery without any trouble since putting it in.
