Hi....out for a ride today and started hearing an unfamiliar clunking/knocking noise....not bad at first but by the time i got back home i could hear it at idle......noise doesnt seem to increase with revving the throttle and is irregular.....on the center stand idling you can put your ear up near the top end of the engine and hear it......42000 kms on a 2015 1000.
all responses appreciated

Hi John, based on your description and my experience I doubt I'm going to be of any help.

Was at first thinking something to do with the valve train but now changed my mind and wondering if you have a seized link on your drive chain? How fresh are the chain and sprockets?

The guys with the rights diagnosis should be along shortly... :D
I’m with @gdrew

Look at the chain and sprockets. Does it make noise running and in neutral.

could you clarify your statement "noise doesn't seem to increase with revving". Are you meaning it does not speed up when revving? Or that it doesn't get louder?

Starting with a cold engine, on the center stand, at idle can you hear it? Or does it only appear once the engine heats up? And more specifically, since you said it is intermittent, do you hear it when the radiator cooling fan is on, or when it is off, or both?

Rather than just putting your ear near the engine, I'd suggest using a loooong screwdriver or socket/ratchet extension as a sounding tube. Hold it firmly against your ear and place it on various places on the engine, moving it around the engine to as any places as possible and listening in to get to where it is loudest. I have isolated and located noises successfully this way. This may help you confirm more specifically the location of the noise and help us think it through with you.
