Twice in the past two weeks the starting sequence has been: ignition ON; dial pointers sweep; dial icons come on; I press the starter button; the starter goes CLUNK and the digital clock resets itself to 1:00 am; the bike does not start. Second starting attempt is successful. The second time this happened, I rode a few miles and stopped to run a quick errand. The bike was dead when I tried to start it-because the clutch interlock wasn't tightly seated (thanks guys for that tip!). Could the clutch interlock cause the clock reset? The bike is a 06.

Thanks in advance for any ideas as to where to go in diagnosing this.

The clock reset comes from low to no voltage to the clock. A loose or corroded battery cable or low battery is the usual suspect.

Thanks to the both of you for the tips-I'm installing a mosfet regulator and will check out the main cabling and starter ground at the same time. If I find the cause, I'll report back-could easily be a week or so.
