Hi!

I have had an E52 for a while on my V-Strom 650.

I bought the Tailight assembly for my E52. I have just installed the lights on the top case and that seemed to have gone okay.

I am in the process of installing the wiring that goes on the Bike and am kind of lost:

1) What is the best way to route the wires to the brake light assembly? it looks like I should be able to route them on the right side of the bike under the rear side panel. Is there a proper way to route the wire?

2) Where should I splice into the taillight wires on the bike? I see them way back in the storage area under the seat but don't see any easy way to access them there. Is there a better spot?

My bike is apart right now so a quick answer would be very much
appreciated!

Same here.
Mine came with lights....
but I am unsure on how to
wire it into the bike.

Hi Storm Girl!

I'll let you know how I make out as I intend to do it tonight.

Unless I hear a better suggestion I will run the wires under the right side panel. There is a gap where the heat shield bolts on and the cable can go through there with no problem. I put one of those small diameter cable protector things around the wires so the will be no issue with rubbing on the wires.

I read a suggestion to put a quick connect inline so that if you have to remove the luggage rack then wiring can be easily sepearated. I went out and bought a quick disconnect wiring thing from "The Source". (Used to be radio Shack here in Canada.. don't know if it is the same down there.)
The part says "2-Conductor Quick Disconnect Power Cable". I see it on the web at:

There might be better connectors to use but I literally had about 30 seconds to look and it looked about right to me. I'll take a close look at it tonight but if I do it right the quick-connect should be able to live under the seat so the wires can be totally removed if I need to do so.

If you have a second could you take a picture inside the case and show me how the wiring looks? Mine doesn't look all that finished as I had to wire it myself.

these are great little connectors - I use them all the time on my bikes, as they will match up to a battery tender. I always set mine up so that the + side (hot/red) is on the covered part of the connector, so it doesn't ground out and blow a fuse. Radio Shack p/n 270-026.

Any luck on the installation? I ran the wires through the same place on the right side where the heatshield bolt is. Then removed the rear brake light from it's socket to get more slack to add the splice. It doesn't work.....maybe I spliced incorrectly or just don't have a good connection. Any help....Anyone.......please.

I got caught up with family matters last night so I didn't even start. It will now be a few days before I get to is as I work late Tuesdays and Wednesday. In the meanwhile I am asking around and looking to see if I can see how someone has done it in the past. I was going to do what you did.. pull the bulb out of the socket to get some slack. If that doesn't help I don't know.. there doesn't look to be a fairly easy way to get the top of that storage area off. Can the Taillight lens/assembly be removed easily?

I was able to complete it tonight.

I was going to put cable protectors around the wire and run it in the gap where the heat sheild mounts.. I did run it there but thought the protector was too big and obvious. I was able to hookup the connectors to the tailights by undoing one of the bulbs. It still was a pretty awkward job but ultimately pretty straighforward. The only change I did from the kit was to mount the quick-disconnect inlne (I read about doing so elsewhere... it wasn't my idea.)

It seems to work fine. Its rainging out tonight so I didn't get to do the obligatory test drive of it ;-(

I just attempted this, and pretty much failed. What a hassle.

First of all, the GIVI wire splicers are, as far as I can tell, cr*p.

Secondly, I followed the wiring instructions on the twistedthrottle.com, which are WRONG.

Using the gray wire (instead of black w/ white stripe) makes the light work in reverse, ie, it turns off when you hit the brake, and turns on when you release the brake. D'oh!!!

Now I've got to cool down and maybe take this up tomorrow.

Troubleman, your profile doedn't tell what bike you have so I'll tell you how I did the wiring on my DL650:
Reach under the tail section, grab one of the tail light bulb housings and remove it by twisting it counter-clockwise. The black wire/white stripe is the ground wire and the white wire/black stripe is the stop light wire. I routed the wiring harness back under the topcase rack and into the tail section behind the seat. PM me if you need clarification.

Thanks for the help. I was out finishing the job (I found the correct instructions through the links here). Is it the case that the instructions to use the gray wire instead of the black w/ white stripe are correct for the DL1000?

Anyway, it's working now. Oh, I take it back about the wire splicers. They do work when you use pliers instead of just squeezing them with your fingers. (Actually, I looked at them and saw the 3M logo, and thought, "They're made be 3M, they have to work!")
