I just acquired a set of Koso Apollo heated grips. I'm willing to install them myself, but I've never done any modifications to the electronics/wiring on any of my bikes.

The following review was pretty helpful, but didn't really have the kind of step-by-step instructions I feel I need:

The fractured English doesn't help, either.

Can anyone point me to a Grip Installation for Dummies source?

My main concerns:
- Ensuring the grips don't stay on when the bike is off, thus killing my battery (I know the Apollo grips have an auto shutdown feature, but I don't know that I'm willing to trust it completely).
- Doing something that causes wiring issues.

First thing to decide is where you will pick up power for these. There is a factory heated grips circuit on your bike that you can tie-in to, although it is a fair bit of work to get to this connection. Do a search using the Google search box on this site and you will get lots of information. If you plan to put on other accessories you could get a multi-circuit add on like those from Eastern Beaver. You can get their solution with a headlight relay kit built in for not much more. Also, as a rule, ground(s) should not go to the frame on these bikes. Study up, make a plan and forge ahead with your project to add these to your bike. Good luck!

I have the Kosso grips on my V2, and I went with the Eastern Beaver PC8 add-on box along with their harness that plugs into the tail lights in order to give me switched power. I connected the Kosso (+) lead onto the switched power on the EB box so that way the grips go off with the ignition key. It's all plug and play and no cutting required.
As for the instructions from Kosso, Red goes to the (+) on the battery and black goes to (-). Run the wires under the bodywork to the front of the bike and connect it to the plugs on your new grips. Be sure to do this before you connect to the battery, and also you may consider using a wire loom or something else to ensure they don't chafe through over time.

So an update on this project...

I decided I didn't want this to be my first electrical project on the bike, especially after I received strong advice to also install a power management system. I took it to a shop that's done some work for me before (whose mechanic also owns the same model Wee as me).

Cost to install the grips and a PowerHub2 was $480 ($130 of that was the PH2), which was a bit more than I originally budgeted. I could have shaved some dollars if I had gone with a cheaper power system.

Now my challenge is getting the bike home before they start charging me storage fees. I had a window of opportunity where rain had washed all the salt off the roads, but then this latest winter storm came in and dumped 6" of snow on us. I can't find an enclosed trailer to rent locally that has tie-down points. So my latest plan is to rent a U-Haul MC trailer for the day and wrap the bike in shrink-wrap (left over from a previous project) for the 25-mile ride home on snow/salt-covered roads.

Good to hear you got the Kossos installed, you will like them. As for transport, what about loading it in the bed of a pickup truck? It would get the bike up high and out of the road spray versus behind the tow vehicle that would be kicking up the road salts

Chemical reactions are slowed down significantly with temperature. If you bring the bike home in sub-freezing temperatures the salt will not affect it much. Rinse it off as soon as possible and if this can’t be done right away then store it in a cold, unheated location until you can wash any salt spray off.
Have you asked how much the storage fees are at your dealer? In my area they are surprisingly low as the dealers hope you will schedule service/maintenance with them in the spring. Just wanted to mention in case it’s not much more than the uhaul trailer.

Good suggestions.

As for the truck, I do own one. But neither I nor the shop have a ramp that will get it into the bed. Renting ramps is actually more than the U-Haul rental, which is only $15.

Storage fees at the shop are around $15/day. It's a small place and they don't have a lot of extra room. So leaving there will result in some spendy storage fees pretty quickly.

Luckily my garage is unheated and temps are supposed to be pretty cold for the next week or so (-10 when I got up this morning). I'd be a little more concerned with leaving it in there with salt residue on it when things warm up a bit, as some condensation on the bike is likely when that happens.

Hey, another option instead of wrapping the bike in shrink-wrap is to buy a large plastic mattress bag at the U-Haul store. You could cut it lengthwise to wrap it around your bike, and then tape the bag closed with some strong tape. Just an idea. But I'm all for repurposing items. FYI, I also recently rented/used a U-Haul MC trailer to get my bike to a shop to get (Oxford) heated grips installed. I absolutely needed the ramp.

An update to the update:

I rented the U-Haul trailer. I had forgotten the sides on those U-H MC trailers are pretty high, alleviating some of my salt concerns. I ended up foregoing the shrink wrap and simply covered the bike with a tarp, which I secured in place with a bungie-style cargo-net I use for the bed of my truck.

All went well and the bike is back in my garage, awaiting its annual oil change and a few other projects before things warm up in the spring.

And the Koso grips are awesome!

I don't understand any of this. In Arizona we just ride it home from the shop. And what are heated grips for? :grin2:

I just thought I would add a post to provide a suggestion for anybody who may have a similar concern in the future. First, rent the U-haul trailer. I can't bellieve, with as high of prices as they have, that we can still rent a motorcycle trailer for $15 a day from them. Anyway, I digress. Second, as to wrap, go to u-haul and by some of their "mover's stretch plastic". I think it would be a cheap and ideal resolution.
