Hi all. I have owned a Ducati Multistrada 1000 for the past 5 years, and it is time for a change. The Duke has served me very well, though an "off" at the track and too many dirt roads ending up with the need for a steering head bearing replacement means the bike will be off the road for a while as it will take me a while to fix it up (as a track bike).

I have always had a V-Strom 1000 in mind as a bike-to-own, and now I am having a serious look at it as it seems GREAT value for money (and the 2010 is on special!).

The Duke had some shortcomings that I would have liked to have known about beforehand, and if I had looked at the forums pre-purchase I would have (e.g valve guides wearing out, fuel guage inaccurate, filling the tank problematic and the fuel tanks reacting to E10 fuel.....)

So I am now reaching out to the experts to ask:
1. Are the 2009 and 2010 models exactly the same apart from the colour choices?
2. Are there any shortcomings for this model?
3. What are the servicing costs like?
4. There appears to be an ABS offering for the 650 but not the 1000. Is that correct and if yes, any idea why not for the 1000?
5. Any owner with Multistrada experience able to comment on the differences?
6. I would specifically like to hear from off-road riders on their impressions. i note the V has a 19 inch front (multi had a 17)....yet the wheels are not wire, so curious on this one.
7. And I would like to get an impression from anyone who has used the V on the track.

1. No idea
2. Personal thoughts: Seat blows, windshield had to be replaced, mirrors inadequate, brakes are so-so.
3. So far all I've done is chain/sprockets, tires and oil changes. Local mechanic did valves for me at about 19K. That ran about $400. For me, rear tires are the biggest expense: mine EATS them. My mileage is a little over 32K miles.
4. No ABS for the 1K.

6. It's fine on dirt roads and hard packed off-road. I avoid sand if at all possible.
7. I've had mine on a road course twice. Chased a couple friends, one on an ST1300 and one on a CBR600. I did fine in the corners but both other bikes have more top speed.

Evening,
I am in Sydney and have a 2010 DL1000

1. Identical except for colour
2.The windscreen is bad, real bad; excessive buffering plus noise will literally give you a headache.
You can go with the Madstad bracket (which is ugly plus) or get a short screen from Pecot (I have one).
The seat is fine (good for about 300km) but not brilliant.
The brakes are not R1 quality but the numbers compare fine with similar bikes.
3. I do my own oil and filter every 6,000km.
Tappets are due every 24,000km. Have not had the shop do them yet.
4. No ABS for 1000. It appears the 1000 is being phased out due to problems meeting Euro emissions standards. No comment from Suzuki on a 2011 model.
5. Have not ridden a Multistrada
6. It is a road bike, like the Multistrada. If you want a dirt road tourer then look at the DL650. If you want a dual sport then look elsewhere.
7. The power is similar to the SV. The bike is higher and feels less precise.

Things you probably want to replace in the first week;
1. the windscreen

Things you probably want to upgrade in the first month;
1. fork brace - makes the front feel much more precise

Things you probably want to upgrade in the first 3 months;
1. tyres; the new Michelin Pilot Road 3 look good - the 19 inch front limits your tyre choice
