Considering we're in between riding seasons here in Pennsylvania, and I'm about due for some tires - I've been taking my time and doing some research on which make and model I'd like to put on my 650 Strom. This web page has some useful info.

I had been recently given a magazine article (either out of Motor Cyclist or another major publication) that tested the Dunlop D607. The writer gave 'em a thumbs up over the stock trailwings.

Any thoughts?

yup...BUT if you ride only on the street get the Me880's and don't look back. :) They did not test them. ..Not that I expect them to test EVERY tire.

I find "track" tests to be different from real road driving ... 1st I cant be flying around at speeds that will remove my license from my wallet. (this means tire temp is different than on the track) 2) I don't drive a sport bike I drive a regular old "street" bike you know where the middle wears down first.

At speed limit speed I can't get much off "center" wear.. at 2x the speed limit I'm still not even close to the "edge" of the tires.. at 3x MAYBE I can ..... Well unless you try, and cut your corners sharp on purpose (a bad line) to try and touch your pegs.

My wear looks like this \---/ with a chicken stripe about an inch or so. The side wear is if fairly decent about 1/2 the wear as the middle.. Soooo if you add the left and right = 50% it equals the same as the middle ... This means I spend about 50% of the time in a corner and 50% of the time straight up. I will take a picture and try to post.

I have found that Metzler's Me88's and Me880's have worked well. A sport touring tire is a sticky tire that lasts about 3-4,000 miles. That for me is not enough. I want a touring tire that just happens to be sticky.. For me the Me880's do that.

I have yet have them loose traction in the corners... Work well in the wet, and seem to last a lot longer than the "sport touring tires" I have tried.

Last set of BT020's cost me $400 at the dealer installed. Having to do that 2x a year hurts. The Me880's will at least last the season....

I am trying out the Conti Road Attacks next on the V11 will see how those work out.

But back to the Strom... I don't need "off road" but do live in twisty road country. I ride moderately fast and want a tire that both sticks and lasts. The Me880's do it for me.

If I start to ride more "adventure" style than I will get the dual sport tires the rest of you use... but till then I honestly really only ride my Strom on the pavement. If that's what you do too than look at the Me880's .... A tad taller in the rear. More gear and corrects odometer error.

With the advancement in rubber over the years tires can last and stick pretty good too. :)

Iron Butt Rally Strommers

Interestingly enough, every single one of the V-Stroms (both flavors) that I saw at the Iron Butt Rally checkpoint in Maine, were wearing Metzeler Marathons. 88 or 880 whichever it is...

These folks know about the importance of getting a lot of miles out of a good tire. 11,000 in 11 days. No big deal, right? :wink: They don't like to take too much time getting gas, so I bet they'd skip a tire change if they could safely do it, eh?

+1 for everything JohnInNH said except that, for Stromette, the Metzeler Z6 takes the cake by a long shot. (yeah, yeah, I know, they don't make them for the Strom but they still get my vote :lol: How do we get Metzeler to make the Z6 for the Strom?!) :cry: Aside from not having a Z6 as a choice I'd suggest the Metzeler Tourance...it's no M1 or Z6 but definitely better than that OEM junkwing thing IMHO. Lastly, JohnInNH, go throw a set of Z6s on that V11! :wink: (The V11 Sport here loves 'em!!)

Pirelli Diablo or Metzeler Z6 Roadtec= allmost the same thing. Both of them are made in the same factory with the same compound, with the same rubber, with the same machines, with the same workers, with the same money etc. The difference in the tyre is the profile. Maybe the handeling is different too. I don’t know, because I do not know nobody with those tyres on his bike (Z6).....

These wear to fast for me... That's why I like the Me880's

On the V11 The Conti Road Attack's are next in line.. I am HOPING they last 6K (rear) http://canyonchasers.net/blog/archives/75-Continental-Road-Attacks-Tested.html

However I am hearing the Z6 gets better wear than the Conti's but I have the tires already... Next time the Z6 for the Le Mans!

On the topic of tyres, I just found out from my pals Chad and Justin at American Motorcycle Tire that a long-awaited shipment of Dunlop D607s has finally arrived. This is a very good 90% street-use tyre at bargain pricing.

They've been in very short supply and on national backorder for months now. Glad to see Dunlop whipped up another batch! :wink:

Found the referenced article...

The Dunlop D607 article was in the November 2005 issue of Rider magazine, page 71 - in the Rider GearLab. I can scan and email it, but I'm not sure how to post it here. You could probably catch it online at Rider's site.

Thanks man! That's exactly where it was reviewed.

I have heard more than one first hand account of that being a fine sticky tire at a good price. That's an attractive combination.

tires for v strom 650

I've used Michelin Anakees since the Trailwings wore out. I like 'em--you can corner hard and they wear fairly well. Don't know about the Metzlers...

Night Wolf... Check your tire pressure and steering head bearing. Also balance...

I have had this problem on other bikes regardless of tire choice. My Honda CB750 Custom was a death trap! Tank slapper city!

I can induce a deceleration wobble on most bikes... Some are MUCH worse than others. It's more of a geometry issue IMHO. (usually)

I had some slight wobble with the stock skins.. It went away after the ME880's were put on.

What size are people using of the Me880's as they don't do 150/70/17 or 110/80/19?

I had my stealer eraah dealer toss the OE rim protectors in favor of a set of 607s when I got my 6Fiddy. One trip up the coast in the rain showed the 607s serious lacking in what I'll call "predictability". Not smooth when they break away (front or rear) and terrible in "heeled over" braking situations. Luckily for me I cut the rear down and replaced both F & R with 020s.

Until something comes down the pike that matches the 020s in wet and dry traction and predictability I'll be sticking with them. Rears usually last about 6K, front seems to go about three times that long. YMMV

They are a bit bigger than stock and belted FYI.

I love my Tourance tires as they handle great and get great mileage, *But I naver go off road and use my Vroomhilda as a Sports Touring bike thus my next set will be the ME 880's!!!

OEM tires lasted 13,000 miles. Front was still good. Rear was shot.
Put on 607s. Have 7,000 miles on them I give them another 2,000 miles
possibly 3,000.

It says in this article, http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/VStrom3.html, to pump the front tire up to 37-40, so I tried it. It was scary. At 40psi the Wee wanderered all over the road. It felt like it was floating. I got 5 miles into a 200 mile trip, lowered it back down to 35psi, and didn't have another problem the rest of the way. This was on the stock Trailwings.

Tires were/are balanced and I run the pressure in the high 30lb range. Bike is not even a year old and around 19,000 miles the steering head bearings should be fine, but I'll check as it would be fixed under warrenty if they is the problem. IMO the stock Trailwings were a much more stable tire. I was able to wear them to the very edge on a Pro Rider course. I'm within 1/4" of the edge on the ME880. Figure I'll try the Dunlops next as I want more than 10,000 miles out of my tires, so no going back to the Trailwings

That may be the problem.. ME880's run at high pressure. I run 48 rear. and 45 front. If they were run low for a long time they could have developed a weird wear pattern. Did they wobble it from the get go?

Steering head bearing is a ball bearing job. Some have no lube from day one. If loose it WILL effect handling.

Both my and my son's DL1000's are rock solid stable. Unless I let off the throttle from 70, let go of the bars, add some rear brake and bang the bars to start a wobble. Then it will start a little, but many will. (expect any bike to do that and be READY to grab the bars and open the throttle!)

The Me880's did it less then the stock worn tires which I expected. They may wear and do it some more like the old tires did.. Time will tell. So far I would buy ME880's again. Ask me in 10,000 miles!
