I was sold a 8 year old tire!

Replacing tires on my K6 and ordered from a Canadian online retailer, they came yesterday (Avon Storm 3D-XM) the rear has a 2021 year date code, but I was shocked when I looked at the date code for the front, 2114, a 2014 date coded tire! I contacted the retailer and my hope is they make this right, am I wrong in thinking it’s ridiculous that they shipped out an 8+ year old tire?

Oops.

Also, could be the pictures, but the tire looks pretty much used to me, with no manufacturing studs on them, and pretty shallow profile. And scuff marks. Are you sure this is not a 2nd hand tire?

Depending on how it was stored, 8 years does not have to be a problem per se. But, just like you, I would not be happy with this especially if I had to pay full price. I would send it back or at least negotiate a fair discount.
As far as I could find there are no limitations as to how long a tire can be sold as new...
Honestly the tire is probably fine as long as it was stored properly. Would still contact the seller though, maybe they can give you a discount or something.

That's been shuffled around the warehouse(s) for a while.

That's not the 14 week of 2021?

Never mind, guess not: Tire Date Code: Reading a Tire's Manufacture Date | Goodyear Tires.)
It's the 21st week of 2014.

If you run the edge of a fingernail on the tread, does it slip easily or grab? This is the unscientific test I use to gauge my comfort level with an old tire.

I'd run it, but I wouldn't be a happy customer if unknowingly I paid full retail for one that's 8 years old. I'd definitely bring it up with the seller.

If they refuse to make it "right" with you somehow, remind them that "Comments on Social Media" (FB, motorcycle forums, their own website, etc) go a long way with making impressions on possible future customers ??

Revzilla has a video out where Ari tested an old vs new tire on the track. Spoiler alert! Just as good. Check it out.

Manufacturing studs...don't think I've ever heard them called that before.
Up to you. Good deal?

Cheap enough I'd forget it. Big bucks? Send it back.

Non-native speaker. I don't even know what these little upright rubber strands are called in Dutch, let alone in English.

It wasn’t full price, but it wasn’t deep discount either, I contacted them, they got back to me and said “sorry, let me look into this right away, sorry again” so we will see what comes out of it, I also emailed their social media relations person.
Looks fine, Id run it .
About 1.5 years, ago, I bought my current 2014 Wee, from a dealer, as NOS (new, old stock). Bike had only 75 miles, on it. Had original (year 2013?) tires, on it. I ran those tires to a no-tread condition (in usable portion, of tread), with no issues. Wasn't my favored tire brand, but they did fine. Yes, a single data point (maybe two, front tire and rear tire :)). I agree, though, that, in OP's case, I wouldn't be happy to, unknowingly, receive quite-old tires. In my case, I knew the bike, and everything on it, was aged. Some compensation (1/4-1/2 the cost, of the tires?) seems in order, to me.

Regardless, good luck!

:)
Likely fine, I was just kind of taken aback to see it, in the light of another day, I’ll probably just run it, we will see what options the online retailer offers up.
Come on..who was it?
I would never be quite confident to trust a "new" tire from 2014.

If they told you (prior to the sale) it was old, and it was half price because of the age, that would be a different story.

If it was me storing the tire since '14, I wouldn't be concerned. I think it depends on how it was stored. Do you know if that tire sat near a heat source, like part of it getting sun light, or?
I spoke to Revzilla years ago about this subject. He said they are careful with how the tires are handled/treated. So, I think it depends.
