Hey all,

Trying to start a build list for the 2007 wee I picked up second hand. Its my first bike but I do want to get into trail riding. My current goal is to Roadtrip from LA up to OR within the next year or two.

While I will have to do more research on what parts of the OR/CA BDR the wee can actually handle, I wanted to ask about the Hyde Racing skid.

It seems to come highly recommended from other members of the forum but most of the posts are in regard to everyday/street riding. While it is light and fairly cheap, can the plastic actually hold up to anything more intense than a gravel ride?

(Edit: I do have a center stand and some SW moto crash guard so that does open me up to more options, but as far as I know, neither of those conflict with the Hyde)

Thanks for any input!

I vote no for the Hyde plate for anything more than a gravel road. Had one on a 650 Strom. Flexi plastic...

I vote no for a 650 Strom on a BDR too. Going to beat it up!

Ahh, disappointing but not surprising on the Hyde plate. Guess I will need to decide if I want and engine-case or guard mounted plate then.

As for taking it on the BDR, I dont mind too much if I beat on it.Would be a fun senior college trip and I have heard of others completing the Utah, Washington, and Wyoming BDRs with the right setup. Worst comes worst there is always the I-5 T-T.

I think there are many threads regarding various skid recommendations but I do a quite a bit of off pavement V-Strom riding and have found the Cosmo skidplate provides great protection for the price and allows easy oil\filter changes as well as sturdy enough to allow me to use a lift jack under it.
I gave it a couple heavy coats of FlexSeal to keep the gravel rock noise to a minimum.

Will 100% look into the Cosmo as a skid plate, do you have the SW moto crash bars or the Givi ones? I hear they have different dimensions and might affect mounting.

Unfortunately most of the skid-plate related posts on the sub are more about cost or compatibility vs use-case. Not many people take their Strom's offroad (and probably for good reason), but I figure I might try and use it to its fullest potential.

Shame but not totally unexpected, guess I will have to decide if I want an engine-case or guard mounted skid plate. As for taking the wee on the BDR, I dont mind too much about beating it up. Ive heard of others completing the Washington, Utah, and Wyoming BDR's but nothing on the CA/OR front.
