I just recently bought an '05 1000. It has heated hand grips installed at the dealership, a cigarette lighter style power outlet, and a powercommander III. I just took the lead for my heated vest off my old bike, and mounted it on the battery under the seat of the vstrom as I'm headed out tuesday for a week long trip through Oregon and expect some cool weather. Now that it's on I am wondering if all these farkles will overload the charging system? I'd rather be cold than have to push my bike miles to a mechanic. Any body have an opinion?

You've got about 150 watts at your disposal.

Been a few people burning out their stators. Using the electrical system's max output for long periods of time may or may not be a good idea.

Sorry, does that mean 150 left after this other stuff is on, or 150 to play with all together? Not that it matters to me at this point cause I don't really know the ratings of the heated grips or the vest?

2 things - 1) read the stickies at the top of each forum - they will answer a lot of questions that get asked often. 2) use the search. Not the forum one, go to google and type [your search terms] site:stromtrooper.com. Without the square brackets. Your question is a common one (very!) and you may either get ignored or blasted for not making an effort to find it yourself. Good luck, from a former Islander.

I believe the 1000 has 400 watts available. I believe the new 650s are also at 400 watts now.

The 150W is the top of the available range to play with beyond the stock configuration using a 400W output bike. I like to say 125-150W. The get 150W, the bike pretty much has to be kept near the maximum output point of 5000rpm. Anybody using heated gear or auxiliary lighting out to have a voltmeter mounted to monitor the charging system. I like on on any bike. In case of charging system problems, a meter lets you know before you drain the battery.

Total capacity:
2002 DL1000 = 350W. All other years = 400W.
2008 and later DL650s = 400W. All other years = 375W.

Yeah, you'll be alright so long there are no problems with the charging system. A vest and grips are well within acceptable limits. Just don't spend a long time idling with all the stuff turned on.

Also, a heat-troller type controller

which pulses on/off uses less power. Many high-low switches use a resistor in the low range circuitry, wasting the extra watts to heat.

Check out Eastern Beaver, he has a switch to turn off one of the headlights, so more current is available for accessories.
