Trying to get my hands around the value of the DL650. I've spent weeks looking at Vstroms, trying to find my first one. I've seen prices all over the board, bikes stock or with every farkle, and with very low miles to very many. I've seen some without a single scratch...to some that looks like they tumbled down the ugly tree and hit every branch.

Two bikes I'll be looking at this weekend (both have ABS, light farkles with no luggage, great shape, and well maintained with decent tires/brakes/battery, and owners say both look and ride like brand new):

2007, 55K miles, $2750

2007, 5K miles, $4700

In pictures sent to me, both look identical. Obviously the price difference is the mileage.

So, what's the value on miles? Deduct a nickel for each mile from the high price of KBB or NADA?

Obviously a higher mileage bike is closer to end of life for some components, and requires the new owner to remember that they may have to put out more funds soon after purchase. In theory, an engine with 5K is going to provide a new owner with much less chance of breakdown than a bike with 55K, so there is value in just that.

Just trying to get my head around how mileage places a part in determining the fair price of a DL650.

Looking for your thoughts.

On the high mileage one, figure in the cost of a valve adjust, oil change, brake fluid/pads,sprockets and chain, and wheel bearings. Head bearings can probably be tightened. Battery.

The low mileage one is good to go.

I would offer $4500 for it and ride into the sunset

$4700 is way high for that bike even only having 5k miles on it. I would buy the higher mileage bike for one because the price and two you know its been ridden instead of sitting up not being used. I would rather have a bike used vs sat up. Theres was a 2007 650 listed locally the other day with 12k, GPS, top box, and tank bag for $3550 the other day. It looked to be in great shape as well so yeah I think $4700 is way high; I feel it should be around $3750- 3900.

if you are mechanically inclined at all you can do the above mentioned items for not too much money.

And then again all that could have just been performed on a bike with that mileage. So possibly the lower mile bike will need attention to those things sooner.

Miles are over rated. Look at maintenance records, inspect the bike carefully and talk to the owner. If you get a good impression I would go 55K and save the $2K in a heartbeat. I might be slightly biased though as I bought my Wee last year with 67K miles. Now at 75K and no regrets.

I've had two 2005 DL650A's.

The first I bought new, I put 62,000 miles on it in five years and never needed a valve adjustment or throttle body synch. The only issue was a bad Throttle Position Sensor at 48,000 miles, a $200 repair at my local shop. The bike was taken out by a Cadillac in January of 2012.

In June of 2012, I bought Greywolf's 2007 DL650A with 77,000 miles. It turned over to 100,000 miles a few weeks ago. I do not baby this bike, but I do take of it. I don't think he's had any issues with it. He also added a dizzying number of farkels and took impeccable care of it. I think he quit doing valve checks at 50 or 60K.

I have had no issues with this bike in my two years of ownership and would not hesitate on the 55,000-mile bike - if it had been well maintained. See if the owner has maintenance records and specs on the valve checks. If the valves haven't changed too much by 55,000 miles they are not likely to now.

Consider maintenance that you might have to do like tires, brakes and chain to use in your negotiations.

Think about how long you might want to keep the bike and how many miles you're likely to put on it anually. You'll probably get tired of the bike before it gets tired of you.

I'd be a little leery of a bike that has sat around as much as the 5,000-miler. That's 700 miles per year. These bikes are less likely to get periodic maintenance and more likely to get ridden with stale gas, old coolant and gloppy oil. That's also a long time for critters to nest and eat wires.

Good luck, whatever you decide you'll have purchased a bike with an excellent reputation as a daily road-eater capable of well over 100,000 miles.

I'll go over all the maintenance records with him first on the 55K bike. He said valves were looked at and adjusted 4K miles ago, so something was found, and taken care of. I imagine that would mean the engine is pretty top notch now, right?

In Indiana, they must be proud of their DL650s. Most everything is over book around here, especially with the ABS option. Would love to find a bike like you mentioned at that price. The high mileage one of 55K is under $3K, and even sinking $500-1000 into bearings, pads, sprockets, etc I would be under $4K. But, how long does the transmission, suspension, and other core components last? 55K in miles make anybody worry about the other major parts of the bike may need replacing soon?

I don't know anything about motorcycle maintenance, other than fluid changes...but willing to learn. I'm somewhat mechanically inclined...but prefer another pair of knowledgeable eyes guiding the way.

$4700 is way too high for an '07, no matter the miles. Also not ridden much suggests not cared for much. Rubber parts like tires and hoses will need replacement eventually regardless of miles.

The other one sounds like a good buy if there are no serious problems with it.

Yes! Machinery can either be used or properly laid up. It cannot be just put away and expected to run like new. If the 55,000 mile bike got all the maintenance it needed, and the 5,000 mile bike was just stored in a barn, I'd expect the 55k bike to be the more reliable ride until the other one was completely checked out and problems addressed.

I figure that, absent thrashing and misuse, a well-used bike is a bike used well.
Most VStrom owners are involved with their bikes and tend to take care of them. Obviosly there are a few out there that don't ride much, and may neglect the maintenance aspect of ownership. the 5000 mile bike sounds good, but everyone that's posted is right, that few miles could mean a bike that needs a lot of attention. Stuff does deteriorate if it's left sitting unused most of the time.

Check out the higher mileage bike and see how it looks to you. If it's had all its maintenance done up to date, you will likely be good to go. And price is not bad, either on that one.

I always say a maintenance history is more important than the mileage.
