So fellow GTA troopers, I have read that the 401 & 404 hov lanes are no bikes allowed. I read that, it is a ticket and 3 points if you use the lanes. NOW, today alone three people have chastised me for not using these lanes and I see quite a few bikes using the lane. SOOOO are they rideable without getting a ticket or not???

Can't say for certain on the 401 HOV lanes, but bikes are allowed on the 404 HOV
No. Bikes are not allowed on any provincial HOV lanes that I hVe heard of and definitely not on 404.

V-Tom, HOV signage on the 404 explicitly includes motorcycles are allowed. That actually was updated at some point early in the PanAm games changes.

I don't think so but I'll take another look.

2. Who is allowed on the HOV lanes?
Usually, HOV lanes can be used by any vehicle with two or more people inside. Starting Monday, and for the duration of the Pan Am Games, that number changed to three.
The change is to accommodate additional traffic heading to Pan Am venues. Vehicles accredited for the games will be used to transport athletes, media and technical officials along the HOV lanes throughout the games. Emergency vehicles, public transit vehicles and licensed taxis will also be allowed to use them.
Airport limousines and electric vehicles with green license plates will only be allowed to use the lanes on provincial highways. Meanwhile, motorcycles will only be allowed on HOV lanes on the municipal roads.
HWY 404 is provincial, not municipal.

the DVP (which connects to the 404 at the 401) bikes are allowed. the 404 bikes are not allowed (unless the signage shows a bike on it or you have that many passengers). south of the 401 you're good, north of the 401 the province has told us that they don't like us.

worse is when they got to HOT lanes.

Government Explanation

sorry i cant post a link but because i dont have enough replies. but the long and short answer is no you cannot ride in the HOV lanes on the 400 series highways.

If you google Can motorcycles ride in the Panam HOV lanes there is a Govt of Ontario explanation and after all no matter what Cam Wooley thinks, they are the Gods of the Road here in Ontario. :laugh2:

The crazy part, lots of bikes using the lane on the 401, I see them everyday. Have not seen one pulled over. Many people telling me that bikes can go in the lanes, everything in print says a big NO for using them. If it wasn't for 3 points I would risk it.

The whole purpose of HOV lanes is decreased congestion leading to reduced emissions. If you were to ever get ticketed for riding in one solo just fight the ticket in court and you would likely succeed. Most Crowns / Justices wouldn't be too strict on the matter. I lived in T.O. for 10 years and always rode my bike in the HOV lanes without issue.

My $0.02 anyways.
