Hi. Recently pulled the front and rear wheels off for some new tires (shinko 705's...love 'em). I put everything back together exactly as it came apart. Chain aligned, axel torqued to spec. Wheel spins a full revolution if spun by hand. The problem: the brake caliper, brake arm, wheel, and to a lesser extent the swing arm all get hot while riding. I'm assuming something with the brake caliper is causing it. Any recommendations before I just tear into the thing?

Check the brake pins. If the pads are hanging up on the pins, they may drag against the rotor and create heat. They may drag because they need lubricant, or because there is some wear or corrosion on the pins that is keeping the pads from moving freely. They make a special high temp grease for brake pad pins; you can get it at most any auto parts store.

Clean the brake piston. If the piston can't retract fully, it may be putting slight pressure on the brake pads, causing them to drag. Take the caliper off, put a small 1/4" piece of plywood between the pads, and squeeze the brake. This will extend the piston, and the plywood keeps the piston from extending too far. You can do it without the plywood, but just keep a close eye on the piston as you extend it. Once it's extended, spray it thoroughly with brake cleaner. Take a piece of nylon rope (you don't want it to shed fibers), soak it in brake cleaner, and use the rope wrapped around the piston to scrub it and remove any stubborn grime. Push the piston back into the caliper.

I'd also bleed the brakes, to be sure.

There's always a chance the rotor is warped, which might cause brake drag, but it'd likely you'd notice that when you were braking while riding.

Take a close look at the brake. Is the key on the caliper arm in the slot on the swingarm correctly? Pry the pads away from the disc, then push on the lever and watch them move toward the disc. Do they move smoothly? Somewhat evenly? (One side will precede the other side; that's normal.) Pry just one side away from the disc then apply the brakes. Pry the other side away and apply the brakes. Do both work about the same, both pretty smoothly?

RC has a good list, but take a very close look at everything first.

Are you sure the axle spacers are in the correct positions? Are the bearings the source of the heat? Check everything.

Make sure the rear sprocket carrier spacer #10 is in the correct direction. The big end goes toward the sprocket and the small end goes toward the wheel. If you put it in backwards, it can damage the wheel and sprocket carrier bearings in short order.
