Hot Grips working well powered from the plug mentioned by a few other Strom owners (thanks again). It took quite a bit of excavating to get to the plug after that airbox was removed but I suppose it was inevitable that I'd be digging around in there anyway.
Attached is photo of the switch location. I wanted it somewhat out of the weather and not liable to collect moisture. The rubber cap is easily found in a good hardware section.

i once saw that someone on this board outfitted his strom w/marine quality switches. that's what i'll do when the time comes. i think it would be reasonable to assume that they'd be waterproof at the very least.

The wires that I used are marine grade to help resist corrosion and I'm still looking for a marine-grade rocker switch. The one supplied feels kinda flimsy.

I believe Cole-hearsee makes some marine grade switches, I've used a toggle switch that has been dipped in plastic with a rubber boot over the toggle. they seem to be fairly weather tight.
