The other day I was out for a short after-work ride and had to do a short stretch on a multi-lane highway. A mile or so in and I started around a curve and suddenly the bike started squirming to the point that it was getting hard to stay in my lane. I then noticed that half of my lane appeared to be scored. I moved over to the un-scored portion of the lane and the problem went away.

I've ridden on scored concrete before with other bikes without issue, but the Wee is new to me. What could be going on?

I wouldn't be quick to blame the bike. I've hit that scored concrete on different bikes and the result has been very similar to what you're describing. It's happened at one time or another on probably all the bikes I've ridden. The type of tire, tire pressure, grading of the road, etc make make it better or worse, but it's not strictly a Suzuki based problem.

Check your tire pressure. What tires are you using and how worn are they? Some tread patterns are more sensitive to rain grooves than others.

its the tires, not the bike

my EX250 disliked road grooves, when I changed from tires with longitudinal tread grooves to tires with slanted tread pattern the problem went away, as much as it ever will

my DL650 is pretty darned good on grooves and metal grates - but you can always feel it. Keep a light touch on the bars.

Very tire dependent. Seems tread pattern. Also nature of road weirdness. Shinko 705 don't seem to care about anything at all. Guzzi with stock tires doesn't notice grooves or grates, squirms on gravel, jumps sideways on tar snakes. Versys with Pilot Road a little squirrely on grooves at Interstate speed where grooves in road not worn. OK in the tire wear areas of the grooves. Dunlop 404 on another bike were terrifying on grooves.

The tire theory makes sense. The Wee came with Bridgestone Trailwings, a decidedly different tread pattern than I've had on my previous bikes, which were 100% street bikes. I've run Shinkos, Pirelli Sport Demons, Dunlop D404s and a few others with no issues like this on grooves or grates.

We have a lot of grooved/cut/hatched sections in various spots on the highways and I have noticed it to some degree with nearly all of the dual sport tires I have used. Nothing as significant as what you are describing but I can certainly see it moving the front tire a bit. I see it a lot of bridges here. I always wondered if it was related to the tread patterns being at certain angles to the grooves which are typically parallel to the bike? I have noticed it a bit on these three. Pattern is similar on all three albeit more pronounced on the TKC70 which is a bit more aggressive than the Bridgestone's.

Battlewings do it a little as well.

Continental RB-2's were famous for following rain grooves. They had a lovely straight groove down the middle of the tread. The Shinko 705 seems to be more impervious to road surface variations.

Interesting.

I switched to Shinko 705s maybe a month or so after my original post. I've ridden the same stretch of road several times with those tires since then with no issues.

I'm chalking it up to the stock TrailWings.

A scored road surface can cause a lot of weird feedback.

Last week I rode a particular stretch of state highway in my county first in my pickup truck, and later while driving a school bus. The surface was being prepared for re-paving and in both vehicles there was notable feedback that went away after I got back on a section that was smooth.

More than the squirmy feeling, I'm conscious that no matter which type of vehicle I'm on or in, that roughed up surface is eating the tire thread big time.

The guys that ride Angeles Crest as the main mountain road fun site have all complained about tire life since the chip sealed it a couple years ago.
Some folks boast of twice the 6K miles wear I get out my Shinko rear tires. Location, location!:crying2:

The only time Ive noticed some squirmyness is one time when I was up in the 105-110 mph range. I think it might have been because it was a little windy that day too. :surprise:

Im on the stock trailwings and only have 750 miles on the bike. Other than the very high speed (105 mph+) uneasiness the bike rides straight as an arrow and pretty smooth. But I came from riding crotch rockets and this thing doesn't do high speed like Im used to but I understood that before buying it!
