Greetings -- (for the 2012+ DL 650) to increase available battery power for heated gear, Greywolf recommends the Hi beam Cut Adapter from Eastern Beaver. I'm puzzled. Wouldn't available battery reserves be greater by avoiding use of the Hi beam altogether and instead using the Lo beams with the Lo beam Cut Adapter? Is the difference negligible? Apart from the heated jacket, gloves & socks, the only other electrical accessory I use are 2 LED flood lights for daytime driving and an extra LED brake light. Please advise & thank you.

Did you ever do the calculation on what the current draw is of your setup? If you have a multimeter, you can even measure it directly.

Unless you drive in the depth of winter, your heated vest, gloves and socks will probably never be on high all the time, so their current draw will be a lot less than whatever it says on the label. LED lights don't use a significant amount of current either. You may well find that everything is well within your energy budget, and you don't have to mess with the wiring at all.

And if you find that your are not within your energy budget, then cutting out a single headlamp (lo beam) may not provide sufficient relief anyway. I don't know specifically for your 2012+ 650, but the average V-Strom seems to have a charging system which can provice a maximum of 400W. A single H7 light bulb is 55W, so that's just 13% of the available budget. If you're 20% over budget, cutting a single headlamp is not enough.

If you want more detailed advice, look up the nominal power draw (in W) of the accessoires that you added. We should be able to find the power draw of a stock standard 650 as well (fuel pump, ECU, standard lights etc). From there, we can see if cutting a headlight makes a difference.

Greetings -- here's me responding to my own post with related info & questions. The EB Hi beam Cut Adaptor appears to influence the targeted headlight at both the Hi beam AND the Lo beam settings. The on/off 20 amp SPST toggle switch will dim both the Lo beam and the Hi beam, but it is more noticeable with the Hi beam. I also noticed that when I cut power to either the Lo beam or the Hi beam, the beam on the other side becomes brighter. Silly me. I expected the Hi beam Cut would completely black out the headlamp at the Hi beam setting. It does not. Based on this new information, the Hi beam Cut Adaptor makes more sense as the way to go in order to free up battery power for heated gear on the DL650, as recommended by Greywolf. Alternatively, something is very wrong.

FYI, the very helpful EB shop told me that I could convert the Hi beam Cut Adaptor to a Lo beam Cut Adaptor by switching the position of the yellow and white wires on the Adaptor.

Last technical point, I didn't think it would matter which pole of the 20 amp SPST toggle switch went to which of the 2 white wires on the Hi beam Cut Adaptor. However, I got 12.7V - 12.8V with the wires in one position and 12.9V to 15.1V when switched the wires, per the voltage monitor with engine idling. I'm easily puzzled. Thank you in advance for any feedback.

I've been reading Eastern Beaver's descriptions as well, and Im a bit confused because he also list this item below the others.

H4 Headlight Cut Adapter - Cuts both beams on one headlight.

Works on any H4 System, this adaptor basically disables or enables one of your headlight bulbs at the flick of a switch.
Works on both beams of one bulb, saves 55-60 watts of power for your other accessories.
Now you can run a pair of Auxiliary Lights and get that triangulation that you need to be noticed by cars.
All high temperature wire, with high temperature VOX sheathing.
Sumitube shrinktube on all terminal crimps to seal out moisture and give excellent strain relief.
H4 Socket plugs onto one of your headlight bulbs. Can be used with or without my H4 Dual Relay Kit.
The removed headlight socket then plugs onto the H4 Coupler.
36” (92 cm) of wire is enough to reach to the fairing inner panel or to a handlebar switch.
You will need a DPST switch for this adaptor. See here (toggle) or here (rocker) for a switch for this adaptor.
Or you can use it with two SPST switches to control each headlight’s beam separately.

H4 dual relay kit

Hank -- the EB H4 dual relay kit is considered an essential modification for the DL650 electrical system. My questions concerned the optional Hi beam Cut Adaptor in order to free up power for heated gear. I was surprised that when activated the Cut Adaptor only dims the Hi beam. I was also surprised that the Cut Adaptor when activated will also dim the Lo beam, but not as much. I also posted other observations and questions, as I just installed the Hi Cut after reviewing instructions and recommendations on Stromtrooper, and the Eastern Beaver web page. EB offers lots of great stuff for the DL650. Happy trails, Jorge
