Hello, I'm new to the site, but have been lurking for a while. I currently own & ride a '06 Suzuki C50 (9,800 mi) & HD Road King (FLHPI w/ 10,000 mi) of which I'm the first owner. I've come to the conclusion that the cruiser-type bike isn't my thing as much as I thought. I'm no longer enamored with the "relaxed" forward position of the feet because my low back hurts after an hour & I can't stand up to let my a** breathe when needed. I'm more interseted in a bike that can tour (on pavement & the occasional gravel road), and would be a good commuter bike. I'm retiring from the Army in a short while & moving back to the Chicagoland area (after a 29 year break) & will need to be able to deal with the traffic:bom_shout::bom_furious::cursing:.

A used DL650 seems to fit the bill well, but I have added to my cruisers for more power- so a DL1000 might be what I want- I just can't tell. BTW, I'm 5'8" (on a good day), 190 lbs w/ a 30" inseam & plan very occasional 2 up but occasional multi-day trips with luggage (1 up). I like speed, but good handling could be better for me.

I'm interested in any Troopers that may be within a reasonable commute of FLW that would be gracious enough to allow me try out their bike (Wee or Vee) so I'll know the right one to buy. Of course, if you're curious, you would also be welcome to try out either of my bikes as well (it goes without saying), I'll have to let one of them go if I buy another bike. Switching from a C50

I'm not close enough to let you ride my dl1000 but I can say I switched from a c50 to the vstrom in the spring for exactly the reasons you listed. On the c50 I was one sore puppy after a couple of hours. I had to put in an 800 mile day this summer on the vstrom and only was a little sore on my left shoulder which I think was caused by the high cross winds I was riding in. The seating position for me is so much more comfortable with my feet under me versus in front, it removes all the pressure from my tail bone.

Sorry you're not closer! I really like the C50 & the RK but I think you're right about too much weight on the tail bone. The cruisers (and touring RK) mechanically are up to longer rides- on good roads, but I think you have to have the right build in order to stay in the saddle long enough. For me, my bikes are fun for short trips around the area, but not necessarily for longer trips. I guess it's a preference for some, but I do notice that when I ride with other cruiser riders they like to stop a lot (and not just for gas). The cruiser-type bikes are also pretty diffecult to ride on gravel, and a bear to clean up afterwards.
