Just got back home from a short ride.
While stopped at a red light the idle RPMs dropped to about 500 rpm then the engine died. I restarted it OK then died again...Next time would NOT start.
Battery seems completely drained. No dash lites at all!
Waited 5 minutes and it started up...enough to get home!
This is a 2005 DL650 with original battery so I assume it must be battery.
However, do not understand WHY the low RPMs

Anyone?????

The important question is WHY did the battery go down?
Exactly. The first thing to do is check to make sure the charging system is working properly. If you put a new battery in before ensuring the charging system is doing its job you run the risk of killing the new battery.

Well, it looks like the starter switch (red button on handlebars) is not engaging.

With key turned on...have dash lights and headlights but will not start.
Wish I could see a diagram of the starter switch to determine what part is faulty.

Took the starter switch apart, cleaned contacts and reinstalled.
Sat on bike, disengaged side stand, started right up :D
However, engine spurted, idleing really rough then died.:(

Could a dirty air filter cause this? IAT or IAP Sensor?
Maybe I got some bad gas?

I'm a little panicky as I'm supposed to start a long ride next Sunday.

Did you check the nefarious connector below the clutch lever?

How does one check the charging system?
Check the voltage at the battery with the engine running, assuming you can keep the bike running for a minute. I'm not certain of the exact voltage, but you should be seeing somewhere around 13.5 or 14 volts (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) if the charging system is doing its job.

This sounds similar to a problem a friend of mine had last summer. The bike would start and run for a while, but if he slowed or stopped it would die. After that it wouldn't start right away, but if he waited a half hour it would fire up again. It turned out the the regulator/rectifier was bad. The bike would start but it would run on the battery only and eventually the battery would get so low the bike would die. After sitting a while the battery would regain enough of a charge to start the bike again, only to stall a short while later when the battery once again got too low. I'm not saying this is your problem, just that from what you describe it does sound similar. By the way, he installed a new battery thinking the old battery had failed. The new one ended up toast because the regulator/rectifier was bad.

Not likely the clutch switch because the bike will start but then stall. If the clutch switch was bad the bike wouldn't start at all.
