Hey everyone,

I bought a 2016 V-Strom 650 XT EXP in the fall and planning to install some auxiliary LED lights over the winter. My goal is to install 4 auxiliary lights in total. 2 spot LEDs activated by the high beam. 2 Flood lights activated by a switch (see attached illustration). I have the Eastern Beaver fuse box as well. I'm a little unsure about how to wire the whole thing.

I'll start with the flood lights activated by a switch. In most diagrams online it looks like the LED lamp ground is connected directly back to the battery. Will it be an issue if I combine the 2 lamps's ground with the switch's and run just one ground back to the fuse box? I've included a diagram for my planned install. Can you please advise if this is correct?

As for the spot lights activated by the high beam. I assume that I will need a relay for this? In that case I have the same question which is can I combine all the lamps's ground and the ground on the relay? Can you also check my diagram and let me know if there's anything that need to be changed?

You can certainly link all the ground wires, as long as the single cable can deal with the current, shouldn't be an issue with LEDs. The switch in your first diagram will not need a ground.

The wattage on the spots is 10W each and the floods are 18W each. I was thinking about using 16 gauge wire. That should be enough?

Regarding the switch, the + on the switch connects with the + from the LEDs and the - on the switch goes to the + on the fuse box?

Please forgive me, but I spent a lot of time thinking and explaining the effects of various lenses. It's easy to over analyze LED light choice, but if you have not already you might want to give some thought to the effect of beam pattern on oncoming drivers.

Unless you have a special lens, both 25 and 45 degree beams spread their light uniformly up, down, and side to side. The light comes out as a cone. That cone is just flatter and less dense with floods than spots.

And watts are not lumens. The cheap Chinese lights come with less efficient elements. You can buy cheap Chinese 10 watt LEDs with older "Genuine CREE" element made in China that put out 550 Lumen for their power consumed. Or, Chinese lights with American made (latest generation) CREE elements that put out 1100 lumen for the same 10 watts consumed.

The same LED element with a spot lens is going to appear brighter on axis than a flood because the flood will spread the same amount of light over a larger area/space.

I know it might seem counter intuitive, but if your goal is not to offend oncoming drivers when switching to low beam, spots aimed slightly down may do a better job than floods. And at night you are going to want spots (25 degree beams) for increased distance visibility.

Floods can be a good choice for daytime visibility because of their greater spread of light off axis.

I agree with Rick to 100% about the beam choice, I added a different beam pattern to my crash bar mounted aux light: euro driving beam pattern.Its most of the time achieved by an added filter as a lens. This pattern is somewhat between a spot and a flood, it gives you distance and a wide angle ( 25 or so) but not as wide as a flood. Its so far the most universal pattern I used , I have flood on a higher mount for cases when you end up in places that you really dont want be and need to see wider areas of your surroundings.

If you haven't purchased your lights yet, I suggest you get them from this guy. He has packages set up for your bike, Strom specific 'how to' videos, and will answer (as evidenced in this thread) questions. ((I have no connection to richlandrick other than buying some of his products))

I spent a lot of time thinking and explaining the effects of various lenses.
