Hoping you experienced Stromtroopers can help with this...
I test rode a 2012 V-strom Dl650 Adventure at a local dealer--the bike is being sold as a "demo" as it was loaned to a journalist who put 1,000.00 miles on it in two months of riding before returning it to the dealer. Dealership has serviced the bike since getting it back. The issue: I took a truncated test ride (due to heavy rain and the limits of a small parking lot in which to ride) and noticed that the engine would THUMP THUMP THUMP at low revs accelerating from near stand still up through low end of first gear (0-10 mph)--once I got the revs and speed up, it stopped and the engine sounded and felt "normal." This was my first time on a V-strom--is this just the nature of the V-twin or could the problem be operator error? :confused:

I took mine back to the dealer the next day and said I could hear a "rattling thump" internally at low 1st gear rpm range, maybe 1000 to 2000. They said ride it and see what happens and we will see what it is like at the 600 mile check-up. I did, it seems to get a little better after warm up but still makes the noise. It is way better than my DL1K was down low so I'll keep riding until the warranty gets close. Runs great and smooth.

Huh, interesting Paul. Yes, "rattling thump" describes it quite well. This machine already has 1,000k on it. Maybe it was just a matter of it not getting a proper warm-up? Did you ever get an official explanation for the, "thumping?" (What do you mean by, "...so I'll keep riding until the warranty gets close." ?)

0-10mph? I'll bet you're releasing the clutch too quickly. When first starting from a stop, you shouldn't have the clutch fully engaged until you are over 10 mph. If you have the clutch lever all the way out under 2500 rpm, a two cylinder will buck and complain. 2500-3000 rpm is the lowest you should go once under way.

Only way to get going. I feather the clutch in a minimal fashion. Fully engaged quickly and it is an internal racket. I first thought it was the same "intake" noise my 04 DL1K made under 3K rpm but it is a more "metalic" noise rather than the air sucking, think old 4-bbl carb under full throttle, of sound my 1K.

When I spoke of the warranty, if it is still making the noise, after adjusting riding style, as per Greywolf, I'll go back to my dealer and ask once again, if they do nothing the bike will be replaced. I would rather lose a few bucks than have to replace an engine down the road.
My hope is Suzuki will see how well the 12 Wee is doing and revamp the 1K. If they make a 1K in fox orange and the same style as the 12 Wee I am all in.

As for the riding the clutch a little more, why would the noise lessen once it is warmed up? My buddy's 12 wee does not make the same noise, his shifts much better as well. My bike is chunky in the shifts which may be part of the issue.

When the engine is cold, The FI uses the cold/fast idle circuit. It injects more fuel to compensate for the intake air being denser and the fuel not vaporizing as well.

Trade bikes with your buddy while your engine is cold and see if he finds your bike different from his. The coolant/oil heat exchanger warms the bike up in a hurry so the pulsing feeling doesn't last long at all.
