Currently on a 2004 650 with 110,000km, still very tidy, and love virtually everything about it but I'm looking to update.

About half my riding is 300-600km days solo without luggage. The other half is two up and luggage weekend trips of 500-2,000km

Im pretty sure I want to go to for the 1000cc as once fully loaded and two up the 650 lacks a little punch. But maybe the later models have enough tweak power-wise?

I can't afford new as they run to $20,000 here in New Zealand and that is more than I can justify to the other half as we continue to renovate the house.

I can google the spec changes between years easy enough, what I'm really interested in from this forum is opinions from riders who have updated, the things you noticed and loved or loathed, sort of "seat of the pants" observations.

I understand. I really want the new 1000 but can't at the moment.:headbang:
The good is that Suzuki is doing what Triumph did the to the Tiger when they made the XC. So we should see a dL1000 with a little more suspension, and wire wheels etc in the next few months. So maybe waiting is worth wihile.:thumbup:

I avoid multilane expressways as unpleasant and not entertaining

Over the last 20 years our government has launched a money war against the citizens in way of aggressive policing by humorless drone tax collectors.

I decided that a fun romp can only occur on small roads with poor pavement and design. Frost heaves, broken pavement holes and cracks, debris are the real world I operate in

Vstrom aggravated giant dirt bike mentality is more at home on these paved cow paths and the bonus of the occasional dirt road..

SO

If this is you then a bigger adventure bike is a good idea. If you pilot on nice highways then any sport tourer will do. here in the USA many BMW big GS are upgrading to the new ones and fresh last generations are appearing at lower pricings, same will happen with Stroms but there are few out there

New Zealand doesn't have many high-speed highways (straight and flat divided highways - motorways/interstate/autobahn). I don't think anything more than a 650/800 is needed.

When you consider you probably won't be able to sell your current bike for much (because of the high mileage), you might be better off keeping it for a few more years. With the money you save, you could buy a brand new
DL1000.

Thanks for the replies Guys:thumbup:

I have an EXC 450 for the dirty stuff, so the Strom is used for gravel and tarsal only.

We are just entering winter here so I have a little time to mull over my choice and trawl through various sites for a tidy well maintained and well priced bike.

I think you're right about getting bugger all due to the high mileage, I'm ok with that, I feel like the bike owes me nothing as I've already got my value out of it :)

I've done a lot of loaded two up riding on my 2012 650, and I haven't had any issues with a lack of power. It's by no means a rocket, but then, I never expected it to be. Basically, it's a blast to ride, even with two people and cargo on it.
