Hey Alberta Riders, been a few months since I posted.
I'll be pretty busy with work and travel for the next 6 weeks, but looking forward to getting together for Java when possible.
Let's plan for another Highwood Pass ride, and maybe some offroad.
Does the Wolfster have offroad skills he could teach some of us????

Happy New Year!!!

I finally did it!! A new red '06 DL-1000!

Almost 5 months since posting here, I met some of you @ Fortress Junction gas station last Aug. I was riding a Duc Multistrada from Arkansas and was thinking about a V as a US replacement, thanks again for your input. Me, my Duc & an F650 BMW are still here in Calgary (home). Well, my buddy in AR picked up my new '06 DL-1000 today in Fayetteville AR & trucked it back to Little Rock to await my flight down Feb 28. I'll break it in for a week and fly back up here, returning there in early June to ride it back here via OK, TX, NM, AZ (Grand Canyon), then N through UT, etc. I'll keep it up here & get in some AB/BC touring for July & early Aug, then ride it back to AR for early Sept via MT, WY, CO, OK and leave it there for the winter. Arkansas is a bikers' paradise and often ridable most of our winter. Maybe I'll bring the V up here permanently in a year or 2.

Pricing info of interest: the brand new '06 DL-1000 was discounted to US$7950 to clear old stock, about 9350 Loonies @ the current ~US$0.85/loonie. Couldn't resist.

I hope to see some of you guys on local roads in a few months, did have the Multi out on Xmas Day for a while.

Route recommendation: Arkansas to Alberta

Hey, Sarge!

You will certainly enjoy your ride from Arkansas to Alberta, especially the scenic route you outline via NM, AZ, and UT. I have some experience in the state north of Utah, namely Idaho.

In June 2006, I rode US Highway 93 from Arco ID north to Missoula MT, and it was a totally delightful ride, especially from Challis ID to Salmon ID. Between the mountains to your left and the mountains to your right are the busy Salmon River and the highway, and the traffic is probably minimal. If you leave I-15 just north of Pocatello ID, you can catch US26 then US20 to Arco, which I did. There's a nice rest area about half way from I-15 to Arco, but I don't recall its exact location. If you stop there and read the posters, you will wonder why the whole area isn't glowing.

North of Salmon ID, you lose the river but gain some lovely mountains. It's a good idea to get fuel at Salmon. Hamilton MT is a pleasant little town for a break or a motel.

I can't testify concerning the rest of your route, but I understand that US89 is a beautiful highway.

I tented overnight at rest areas on Interstate highways in IL, NE, CO, and ND, and only once was a broom pusher annoyed by sight of my tent. I expect to do the same this summer in VT, ME, NS, and PQ; if I survive, I will report here on my experiences.

Riddle me this: what commercial venture is earning money in Arkansas and Alberta but in no other state or province?

Answer: diamond mining! Diamonds have been mined in AR for about a century, and Grizzly Diamonds is apparently finding jewels in Alberta!

Ride on!

Calgary bike Show

Tyler, yes there was some interesting stuff at the Calgary bike show. The KTM display was amazing, and also the new models of 650 BMW's look good.
I was also suprised at the new lower prices of the Harleys. The new Harley baggers sre very nice. (i can't believe i said that)
V-Stroms were a bit of a YAWN.

:) I did that ride last June after picking up a Blackbird in N.C. Brought it back up through Alberta and then to Vancouver. Great ride, enjoy the breeze across OK and NM, be sure to grab a terrific steak as you pass through Amerillo, you'll know the spot when you see it, ={8^)\,,........,,

Be sure to ride Hwy 12 in Utah, north of the Grand Canyon, one of the most scenic rides you'll see. It is a must IMHO.

You might also want to include Beartooth pass, out of Yellowstone north into Montana. Unbelievable; if you love a view and mountain roads, you are in for a treat.

Enjoy the ride,

Blair

The V's are always a bit of a yawn. But hey what do you expect from perfection??? I was particularly blown away by the new KLR!!! Completely redone. I really liked the V-Rod, the riding position was fun.

I am off to TX next week for work and hope to run into Yogi. My new MRA windscreen just arrived today! I cannot wait to put it to test.

Lets grab a coffee soon, how about the first week in Feb? Drop me a line.

Tyler.
