Anybody know where I can get a good price on Heidenau's?

I'm looking for a Vee Rear 150/170-17.

They were down to $160 back in the winter, but now everyone seems to want $190+.

No personal experience but I saw them in action on the Haul Road from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay.

We were two up on our Vee with brand new TKC 80 knobbies installed in Fairbanks. We had no problems but on the deep mud/gravel stretches it was a handful but we made it without incident.

There was another couple on a BMW GS, two up, with Heidenaus. They appeared to have no problems either. Big difference was that they had ridden from Vancouver BC on the same tires fully loaded. That's around 2,100 miles. The Heidenaus looked just fine when we got back to Fairbanks and he was planning to ride them home. My TKC 80s, however, after 1,000 miles on the Haul Road were about 1/4 worn.

TKC 80s are about as aggressive a tire as you can put on a big adventure bike but they only last about 2-3000 miles. People are reporting 10K and more on Heidenaus.

My feeling is that brand new Heidenaus are about 75% as capable as TKC 80s in mud or gravel. But after 2,000 miles, the TKC 80s are nearly worn out and the Heidenaus are only 20% worn and will be a lot better than the TKC 80s. So, most of the time you will have better tires with the Heidenaus unless you change your TKCs every 1,000 miles.

I just got mine from cyclenutz.com and I believe the price was $323 shipped to my door for the pair for my Wee. Problem I was having is Websites like Revzilla and Twisted Throttle was they would show they had them and then you'd select them to checkout and they would be outta stock. Didn't want to wait till last minute only to not be able to get them, We leave for Alaska June 13 so a lot of time left but rather be safe then sorry.

A friend of mine had them on his 1200GSBMW. He really liked the way they handled and got 10K miles out of them. He rides fast too. Runs away from me in the twisties riding 2 up!

John, what are you putting on the front?

My front is a TKC 80 lightly worn. I plan to leave it on until worn out and then switch to Heidenaus there too.

I've seen some forum stuff where a lot of guys are running that combination and are happy with it. Keeps the front end more stable in gravel while getting decent wear on the rear.

Have a look for the Mitas E07 if they are available in your area [mine are great and looking at getting 20,000+kms/12,500+miles on the rear].

Admittedly I ride a 650, but wear rate on the 1000 is only an issue if you are hard on acceleration all the time.

The other thing to look at is to go for the 140 width rather than the 150, it gives better gravel grip because it bites through rather than sitting on top.

Another thing to be aware of is that I think there are two different tread patterns for the Heidenau K60 rear, one with an unbroken strip all the way around the tyre [the 150 I think], and the other with the stepped pattern all the way around.

Wow, prices do seem to have jumped in just a week. I was shopping these just a week or two ago, and they were not this high. If you're am AMA member, BikeBandit gives a 10% discount.

Working on my 2nd set now. Couldn't beat $190 for the rear a few months ago. Pretty steep but IMO worth the money. Have gone through Trailwings, TKC's and Shinko's. Planning to stick with the Heidies. :yesnod:

My riding bud has a set on his wee and loves them. He and I always rode Metzlers before. I'm just too dutchy to pay that much for tires. Tourance or K270s for me

Same here. He on a 1200 GS with the Heidenaus and me with Full Bores. I like my full bores for the money and the overall balance of on and off road capability, but his tires are just better. Neither of the sets of tires much liked deep soft sand, but his did better. They may be my next tires (I've half a season left on mine I think), even if the initial cost is a bit high. Hopefully when I need them they will be available at a decent price.

I also received a set from Revzilla recently. Need to get'em mounted up for my upcoming trip. Have another set waiting for me in Fairbanks, AK. Come on, summertime!
