I'm working out exactly where I want to put a Powerlet socket to be used with the heated clothing that's coming for Xmas (either Widder or Gerbing, not sure which yet).

I already have two Centech FB-4 (http://www.easternbeaver.com/Home/Main/Products/Centech/FB-4/fb-4.html) fuxes boxes mounted, one directly off the battery, and one switched off a relay hooked into the taillights, so I have all the power options I need. There is already one P-socket driven off the non-switched box drilled into the "rear fender", nestled up under the rack, as an attachment point for my Givi topcase with electrical attachment.

Now I want a socket someplace on my left side, close enough for a short-ish cord to attach it to the vest/jacket liner I'll soon be wearing. Where are folks placing their sockets? Drilled into the fairing, if so, where, etc. ? Photos would be great!

I don't use a powerlet socket, I use the same plug I keep attached to my battery for my Tender. I don't connect directly to the jacket anyway, I go through the heat troller I velcro to the left side of the tank above my knee. I keep it on the whole trip and there is enough lead from the Tender cord to go out from under the seat so you could take the troller off if you want. I guess I just take the simple way.

Although I got the plate that mounts two outlets on either side of the ignition switch, I'd do it differently if starting again. I ride with some long distance bikers, mostly engineers, and they put the 12vDC/Powerlet connection from the battery (fused) under the seat and pull it up between the seat and tank when they need it. Not as elegant as my solution, but puts power much closer to where it's needed. They're all using relays. Just my $0.02.

I mounted my socket here-

I attached a length of coiled wire between my heated vest and the plug so it has a bit of play. It works well for me. I bought all the components except the heat controller at a local marine supply store. Much cheaper than the local bike shops.

I definitely don't want a free power plug under the seat - believe me, with all the stuff I store in there (tool kit, electric pump, tire repair kit, helmet cables, zip ties, space blanket, headlamp, manual) plus the space now occupied by the two new fuseboxes, there ain't any room for something like that to fit nicely. Besides, I'm anal. ;-)

jrw600 - I like it. I've played with drilling out a socket hole on the extreme forward end of the side tank panel, about 2" above where your socket is mounted. I like location, but I can't quite tell if there will be enough space behind the panel to make it work. At least the panel is cheap and easy to replace if I need to ... ;-) How is your socket mounted? Is that a bracket that is held by the hex bolt that holds the forward end of the side tank panel?

As you can see from the picture the socket is held to the side panel by two angle brackets and hex nuts. There was adequate room there for the rear of the socket. Although the panel does flex it is stable enough for the plug to be inserted and removed with no problems. I did not want to drill a hole large enough in the side panel for the socket to go through. I felt that if I ever sell the bike the socket can be removed and little evidence is left.

Cigarette Lighters

I'm not sure what all those power adaptors are, but I had the local BMW dealer order me a stardard cigarette lighter that clamps to the handlebar. It fits nicely up by the brake resevoir out of the way of the two RAM Mounts. If anyone is interested I'll dig out the manufacturer's name.

Almost the same place. Its been working very well. I ran a extension from my tankbag to the outlet with a on off switch. It works very well for my gerbings stuff.

Power socket for heated clothing

I am just a newbee. Just bought my V-Strome this spring. I have seached through the treads on this site and found some great infomation. I was wanting to adapt my heated clothing harness to the V-Strom and found a thread that suggested a relay off the tail light. It works great the power is off when the bike is off and I put a switch in line with the harness to control the heat on the fly, on the underside of the couling on the left side just under the seat.

Just waiting for the Alberta weather to warm up some more have to break in the new bike before my trip to Hyder Alaska at the end of May. :D
