Can you have too many extras hard wired to the battery??
I have a 12 volt power outlet wired to the battery (in line fuse on the hot wire), and I want to use a heated vest as well, and I THINK, they hook up to the battery...
Should I hook up the power outlet to this wiring behind the rad I have been hearing about?...
help..:?:

Yes, you can have too many things wired to the battery. However a 12 power outlet and a connector for a heated vest aren't too many unless you plug something heavy into the power outlet. It's not so much a function of how many but how much current the pull when combined. There is only so much available for "Extras".

As to wiring the power outlet to the heated grip connector behind the radiator, I wouldn't. That's relatively small gauge wire going through a circuit that already has some devices on it. Since your outlet is fused just leave it where it is.

I was actually thinking that With the spade connectors in place for both the 12 volt outlet and a heated vest attatchment, there might be TOO MUCH, physically in size. I had not thought of the draw on the battery.
I do not anticipate running anything other than my GPS through the outlet, and I would only run that on the odd trip,
The vest is to be used during early morning commuting to work, so rarely would there be "double draw" (good term eh???).
I dont anticipate putting any additional electrical farkles in place. Will I be okay then for the addition of the vest attatchment?:?:

A GPS draws hardly anything, so you should be good to go with that and the heated gear. I don't see a problem at all with tying the GPS into the heated grip connector behind the rad. I wouldn't attach the vest there, though.

I have a GPS, heated grips and often wear a Gerbing vest or jacket liner with no problems. Although, I did switch out one headlamp, just to be on the safe side when the jacket and grips are on.

Electrically the devices are connected in parallel when they are all directly connected to the battery.

The 650 has about 125 watts available for extra devices, the 1000 has a little more (I'm not sure how much). An electric vest probably draws around 55 watts. A GPS is negligible (probably about 1 watt or so). Hooking those directly to the battery is no problem.

I recommended connecting the power outlet to the battery instead of to the existing connector simply because they are "Handy". It's easy to say you aren't going to plug anything else into it now, but some day you might forget and plug something like a little compressor into it. The way things are now is fine and you won't have any problems electrically, even with both running.

Physically I have several things connected to the battery on both my bikes. I either use a ring terminal for each one or combine several wires into one ring terminal. You can twist both positive wires for your devices together and put a single terminal on them or use individual terminals, your choice. As long as they don't touch anything they shouldn't you should have no problems. I prefer ring terminals to the "U" shaped terminals because they won't come off even if the post bolt gets loose.

I appreciate the note regarding "compressor use" which is timely, as I do have one under the seat with a tire repair kit, so I am prepared to use it in the 12volt connector if need be. I will then leave the power outlet wired to the battery. This is good.
I will look forward now to warm vested mornings on cold spring days, and in peace with your help.
