I am debating on changing the handlebar on my DL1000--There is a fair amount of flex with the OEM and I like the idea of a crossbar for strength.
Any ideas?

Are the bars flexing or just moving around in the rubber mounts? The little 6Fiddy has solid mounts and I don't feel any flex at all.

I put on some CR low MX bars w/crossbar mostly to move my body forward out of turbulance. They are a bit too low for full lock to lock but I would think the CR High bars would do it. With the Windstrom in the middle I'm usually in a comfort zone.

Jirvine, how tall are you? I'm 6'3" and longer in the upper body. I'm looking for a similar effect. Has anybody else modded bars to get them leaning a little bit further forward? I'm theorizing this will also help with my unbelievable side buffeting issues.

I'm a tad over 6'. I have a windstrom shield at the middle height, could go one higher but them I'd be looking through it too much. It is working well, I can listen to music through the ear plugs @ 80 unless it is nasty windy. The CR Low requires some cutting of the hand grips and shortening of a bolt to clear and I still have to play with it to get full lock to lock without the mirror hitting the Windstrom, probably not an issue with narrower screens. Check the last picture http://barko1.smugmug.com/gallery/424101 I have a Ram mount for the GPS, a throttle lock, and a Ram mount for the Roady, plus an added switch for the PIAA lights and a button for the electric chain oiler. all on the poor little bars. I had to modify the bar end mounts as being aluminum bars the hole is smaller. The bars themselves are wider but i have no complaints about that. Did 1000 miles this weekend in decent comfort except the wind and the swarm of bees I cut through. The early photos in the gallery show the stock bars, the picture with the GPS and Roady are on the low bars.

Let me preface this by saying I'm 6'3" and weigh 320lbs. I can make this bike anything I want it to at low speeds, so that's not an issue. I get side buffeting on the highway that feels as if the bikes is sliding sideways. It makes the bike feels unsafe.

My theory is that too much of my considerable weight is over the rear half of the bike, compressing the shock and causing the front end to feel loose (for lack of a better term). I have followed suggestions on how to adjust my suspension, and seen no change. Things improve slightly when I lean forward.

I think my solution is lowering the front end, and get bars that force me to lean forward. I'm about ready to sell and go back to a cruiser. :(

I "assume" you've already cranked in as much (rear) preload as you can....So I guess you are heading in the right direction by lowering the front end and trying to get your weight forward.

I noticed that when I installed my HT panniers that what side push I got in cross winds was evened out...That is the rear "sail area" with the panniers seemed more equal to the sail area of the fairing.

I'm no pro at this but I would think what you need is at least a stronger spring on the rear end (the bikes). Stock was probably designed for 160 lbs. How many miles on the current shock, might be most reasonable to have it rebuilt with some valving and spring designed for you. Badlands Motors here in NM could do it as could any decent suspension tuner.

That's always an option . . . . All I'm saying is that the bike was designed with both a rider and a passenger in mind...And I think the rear spring rate is probably up to the task. Shock valving is another matter.

I think that the load carrying capacity for the bike (650) is 453 lbs.

Rear shock seems find with MAX preload. I plan to change the fork spings soon. I think I also need to change bars to slightly alter my riding position...we'll see. I love this bike and want to do whatever I can.

Hated the stock bars position and flex on my 650 and changed out to
Magura EX Line bullbars. They are aluminum, dirt bike bars and you need an adapter to change to the larger size bars. Magura makes the needed adapter and it is a bolt on affair. Moves the bars forward a bit, takes the flex out and gives my wrists a better position for my kind of riding.
Added Dual Star heated grips on a Heattroller, Pro grips and the Suzuki handguards. I'm happy with this setup excpept for the fact I spent about $250.

XR650L Bars

The stock DL650 bars are too high and pull back too much for my comfort.
I installed XR650L bars and they fit very nicely! They do not pull back as much and are 1 1/2" lower than the stock (my stock bars were pushed forward to give me more arm room).

I had to make some minor adjustments for cowling clearance - but have full movement (including hand guards). The cross bar is in the middle of the clamps.

Installed some MSR hi bars, they fit well and I think they'll help...no test rides yet due to work/heavy rain. I have a question for anyone who can answer......do the fluid reservoirs need to remain level?

no, they do not have to be perfectly level as long as the fluid covers the bottom of the reservoir they will be fine. just make sure they are full of fluid. i put a set of higher bars on mine with more pull back and the reservoirs are at a pretty steep angle and they work fine. the ones on my gold wing are even steeper and thats the way they came from the factory. :?
