So i decided to put some OEM handguards on the Strom today. What a freakin' disaster. The directions weren't as bad as I thought and I was under the impression that I could get the last retaining nut out without too much of a hassle due to my reading the caveats and advice placed on here. Was I wrong. The left side was left in the bar, but I was able to fish it out with a hanger. The right side? No such luck. Not only did it not come out with the rest of the assembly, it was WEDGED in there. I took the handle bars off and managed to lose a chrome cap for the riser bolts as well as a washer for the top of the risers to the nether regions of the underside of the fairing. No, no no, dear reader it was worse than that. I got the handlebars off, and could not get this nut out. I tried compressed air, a rubber mallet on one end and then the other, I tried not 1 but 2 hangers, 10 gauge wire, and so on. Oh yeah and an electrians snake and a plumbing snake. It was JAMMED. The nearest bike shop that had the nut was 73 miles away (and of course it was within 25 mins of closing time, AND i have a huge charity ride tomorrow) and wanted 8 bucks for the nut. I managed to find an old friend (who was my coworker when I worked in a shop and also raced CCS) and he noticed the 1993 Gixxer 1000 used the same assembly. He kept shop open for me til I could get to his place 30 miles away and 25 bucks later I have the assembly. I shot home and reinstalled everything, so far so good, now i am CONVINCED the bars are not in the same position i.e. tilt but my mirrors, etc are showing the same view/perspective as before. . .
