Hi guys. I was so excited to get my bike plated and titled in California, and then it happened... (well, a SERIES of events happened, which has all added up to a nightmare of a day)

What it boils down to is that the frame VIN matches the title, but the emissions/secondary VIN sticker was removed by a PO. The DMV referred me to the CHP, with whom I need to make an appointment.

Will I be able to title this bike in California and get it plated? I'm really worried, and my foul mood isn't helping that... please halp! Have any of you been in this situation? What's likely to happen?

Just why so many folks get all whacked about the labels on the bikes, I dunno. Mine is missing a few of those labels but I had no problem keeping the license current. Some of the warnings on the gas tank might be a but fussy but info on the swing arm and frame, who cares.
Yeah, the big Suzuki decals in the fairing are hokey too but not part of the EPA requirements.

As you are well over the 7500 mile 50 state emissions tag rule, I would assume you should be good to go. Quit often the field office employees aren't very knowledgeable on non turn key registrations and I've found that calling the main Ca office for clarification on matters such as this very helpful. They have even called my local DMV on my behalf to straighten matters out on two occasions.

Thanks, guys. I sure hope this can be sorted out. The CHP told me the soonest I can get an appointment with them for VIN verification is May 26th (!!!!!). I feel like if I can't get it titled/reg'd, I should ask the seller if we can reverse the transaction, but May 26th is very nearly two months out from the date of purchase. I'm really antsy about all of this.

Be aware, from DMV site;

Buyer
If you purchase or acquire a vehicle from a private party, you have 10 days from the date of sale to report to DMV the change of ownership. Transfer fees must be paid to DMV within 30 days of the purchase date, even if you do not have all of the required documents. Failure to pay your fees to DMV within 30 days will result in transfer and use tax penalties.

Agreed, which is why I always (always) do my transfers at AAA.

Agreed, which is why I always (always) do my transfers at AAA.
I'd love to do it that way, but the northern California AAA doesn't do inspections (SoCal does). And yeah, I'm quite upset over the prospect of being hit with a fine simply because the system is too slow to process my bike :headbang:

As a follow-up, I had my CHP inspection appointment today (they schedule 6-7 weeks out- !!!!!). The officer was a pretty cool dude, saying things like "I don't care if it doesn't have an emissions sticker on it, since motorcycles aren't smogged anyway and it has enough miles" and clearing the bike for titling/registration in CA despite only having the frame VIN available to him. The DMV did not balk at his inspection sheet, and I walked out with a plate, tags, and registration card for my new baby!

So, for anyone on the interwebs searching for this same issue: I got a chill CHP officer for the inspection of my bike, the inspection went down without a hitch, and the DMV didn't say anything about the missing stickers/labels on the bike. I think it comes down to the people you deal with- some may make it easy, some not so easy. Best of luck.

I've dealt with the CA DMV on an out-of-state motorcycle, and they were less than well-informed. They could not find the second sticker on my bike and told me I would have to go to get a CHP inspection.

Yes, the CHP inspections always take several weeks to get scheduled. But when I got to the CHP, I too was helped by a very chill officer there who took care of me. BTW, he told me that out-of-state bikes ALWAYS have to go through CHP inspection, unlike cars which can be verified at DMV.

No, my KLR650 purchased with NV registration was inspected and passed at the local DMV without any problem. Which is interesting because our local DMV office has been notoriously unhelpful in the past, requiring me to go to Sacramento HQ to get things done that they wouldn't do here.
