I was having my morning coffee and reading the latest edition of Adv Motorcycle magazine and thought about something when I was reading about ABS brakes. For ADV bikes, why can't they make it so the front brakes are ABS and leave the rear standard? Is this a crazy thought or am I on to something here. When you're off-roading you use about 95% rear brakes and when on road you use about 75% front brake. An on/off switch would be easy too but this will help with weight and cost.

We are talking "ounces" with a bit of wiring and a switch to disable, I want that option above it not even being there. Honestly in many situations the ABS won't cause an issue offroad, I see how and where Craig rides, and he has only had a few real oh shit pucker moments due to the ABS kicking in.

The whole idea behind ABS activation on a bike is comparing wheel speeds. How would the computer know when to activate front ABS if the rear was allowed to skid? Maybe something like that can be done when GPS gets accurate enough to compare wheel speed to bike speed.

I have wondered if you can make a system that only looks at one wheel. It would look at the rate the one wheel slows down when brakes are applied and if it suddenly slows down it would signify lock-up and could release pressure.

It would work great in the scenario the OP mentions and also on unicycle motorcycles.

Thoughts are good buddy, how you feeling?


I'm ok, thanks. My chest still hurts when I sneeze or move the wrong way but I'm sure that will be the case for the next couple weeks. Excited that I will be doing all the work on my bike myself and am now waiting on insurance to provide me an estimate. Monday I'm going to start removing all the broken parts and give the bike a good wash. It's covered in dirt just from some of the dirt trails we were on.

I'm ok with the ABS cut off switch wiring from Easter Beaver. Steep off road I want it all off, regular non perpendicular gravel abs is fine. Heck my gravel driveway is 28 degrees in a 200' stretch. I can ride it in abs mode but I have to go really slow & if go too fast the abs just lets me go faster. I have trails on my place that are dirt and closer to 35 degrees, so abs would get you crashed really quick. If they are wet.......nope nada I stay off them completely.

I'm pretty sure bmw, honda and triumph have mapping for off road that will split the abs disengaging the rear wheel part. I think you are correct, it is a good idea.

So where is this thread on the Oh - hio antics? Cant find it anywhere...........

I always thought that is looked at front vs rear but then it wouldn't work properly on all wheel drive vehicles... but it does work. It must at some level level look at how quickly wheels slow down to determine the onset of wheel lockup.

I don't think so. Each car wheel has a speed sensor so all four can be compared. TC is looking for a difference in wheel speeds and will selectively apply braking on a comparatively speedy wheel.

Remind me when the snow starts falling and I'll take out an All Wheel Drive 911 (or a Macan or Cayenne) and double check what happens when all four wheels start spinning. (I'm pretty sure the traction control works properly as I spend a day on an ice racetrack driving 911C4S, 911 C2S and Cayman GTS in Quebec a couple of winters ago and it all worked fine.)
