Hi folks,

I read that you should replace the eight long bolts that come with the crash bars, which I just received this week. So I went to a CTF store (chain of fastener specialists) right nearby my place.

I explained to the counter guy why I want to replace them, because of recommendations on this board. He pulled two samples, long and short ones. Checked the code on his computer and said the long one "is as strong as you're going to get." He plopped the long bolt back into my plastic bag and checked the short one. He said he can get me a slightly stronger bolt to replace the short ones . . . then paused, indicating I'd be wasting my money replacing either of them. So I said thanks and he appears to have saved me, what $30 or more?

So what gives? Am I missing something? I mean, the shop knows fasteners.

I did H&B Crash Bars.

I did see where some guys replaced them with harder stuff.

I think it was because they torqued to hard, and stripped the allen head.

I had no problems, with the stock stuff.

Seems to me the issue isn't really the original bolts, but the threads that the bike has are quite soft. Just be careful when you torque them in. Also, make sure you have the bolt lined up exactly. If you can't get it started and turn a bit with just your fingers, it isn't right.

Other than that, I didn't have any issues.

No problems here either. Two DL650's. Two sets of HB bars. At least 4 tipovers. The last tipover slightly cracked a turn signal lens. No damage on any other tipover other than scratches on the bars.
