Some of you may not look into the modification forum. Forgive me for "double posting" this.
Only adding it here as I am not sure if other years have the same style hand guards, and that is where the button is location.

I switched to MyQ phone App,
  • it allows you to open the garage door to Amazon, FeDex or other courier services, when you are not at home.
  • Amazon "Key in-delivery" service is offered if you are Prime member
  • It will automatically lock your garage passage door to your house, when you open the overhead garage door to package delivery.
  • It will send you text or Email if doors are left open or if somebody force the door open at night for example.
  • It can be shared with family members
Using it for about 5yrs now and it works every time.

I also use MyQ on our Chamberlain garage door opener👍
I also have the MyQ app but and use most of those features.

My phone is not always available to me when I am on the bike. It is either in my jacket pocket or tank bank.

By the time I take it out, unlock it and open the app, I can walk up the driveway and open the door. Yes I can hook it up to my Google assistant but I prefer not to.
I remember an opener device that hooked up to your hi beam switch. You flicked the high beams a couple times and it would open the garage door. I think it was bluetooth-activated, had nothing to do with the hi beams themselves. I haven't seen them advertised in years.

Throughout some research I came across a few different methods and devices. None were as simple as I wanted them to be or as inexpensive as I wanted it to be.
I also like to do-it-yourself over a ready made product.
I really like your method to tap into the garage door controller! I want to add this to my bike.

I've had my garage door controller in one of the small side compartments of my SW Moto tank bag over the years. I poke a finger at the side of the bag until I hit the correct button, and it's a pain really. I'll have to look into your method for my old school Stanley garage door opener. I have an old Stanley controller with a mucked up button which would be perfect.

Another idea for a switch, are the switches that are sold on Amazon Ebay etc, which replace the brake or clutch perch's clamp, IF this would work for a person's specific bike. I believe the V-Strom clamp also supports the rear view mirror. A water proof kill switch would certainly work.

Again, excellent idea!

I did see a few other options for the buttons you mention. Howeve, I wanted to keep the handle bars as "clean" as possible. Especially that I did add 2 buttons on the other side for the aux lights.

I just have a door opener on my keychains and a piece of velcro to stick it to on each bike.

Vizi-tec has a door opener/ brake light modulator combo. Seems interesting 🤔.
I clip my remote to my bars…but I sometimes forget to toss it into my top case if I stop at the store
