I have the Vstrom shelf on my DL1000.

I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 265WT.

It comes with a suction cup mount for the window.

It also comes with an adhesive pad. The pad works like this; place the adhesive pad down permanently and then use the suction device to hold the Nuvi to the permanent pad.

I know the adhesive would be strong; but it appears the weak link would be the suction cup device.

I would some ideas to make it more permanent.

Anyone overcome this problem?

I would have loved one of the motorcycle units, but it wasn't going to happen...

I'd NEVER use a suction cup to mount a GPS on a motorcycle. There are a bunch of mounting options out there. Find a more secure mount.

Absolutely. My Zumo has dropped off my car windshield a few times.

hmmmmmmm, that doesn't sound good at all.

I'm glad I posted before I did the work.

They don't sell a hard permanent mount though....?

It's a car GPS. It is not motorcycle friendly, not waterproof, and probably isn't good at handling the rougher ride either.

If you must....go with a RAM mount. As Wolf states, it may not last long.

Cheers

+1MILLION!!! Get a RAM mount and mount it on your bars. The suction cup WILL fail and toss your new GPS down on the concrete. Also, don't trust the stock Garmin bracket to hold on to your nuvi when the road gets bumpy. Get the whole RAM kit.

You'll need:
nuvi 2xxW cradle
cradle plate
mount arm
u-bolt mount base

Total cost will come in at around $35. Expressmounts.com has good prices and awesome customer service.

I've been using my nuvi 660 (a "car GPS") on my Strom for almost 2 years. It works great. No problems from vibration and a simple zip-top bag takes care of any rain issues. All of the marketing about the Zumo being "motorcycle specific" is mostly just that, marketing. Remember, there are 4 kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, statistics and marketing.

I use the suction cup on my nuvi and it actually holds pretty well. I chain it to the windshield bracket just in case but never have had it fall off unless I haven't licked the suction cup for a week.

I actually pulled on the suction cup when I first used it to see how strong it could hold and stopped because it was flexing the windshield so much. Made it to seligman, AZ and back home w/o an issue(over 700miles) and many many fireroads.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd prefer to know my GPS is going to stay put rather than keep track of when I last licked my suction cup...;)

I wonder if the convex shape of the windshield has something to do with that?

I would prefer a dash mount, but I'm looking at the ram stuff now anyway. We'll see.

I would like to pay $650 for a Zumo :var_7: but I don't understand why it takes a $400 price increase to make something waterproof and use buttons instead of the touch screen... AND the screen is SMALLER? Guess if people will pay that price  then they will keep selling them....

Forget about the suction mount unless you're gonna glue it. Even using the supplied disk, mine fails about once a month in the cage.

I would look at the dash mounts aswell, I like the position I have mine in since I don't have to take my eyes off the road at all.

I really only use the suction cup on my nuvi because it was a newegg refurb with a dead pixel therefore I got it dirt cheep. I don't see the need for me buying a mount for my gps that costs more then the unit it's self:rolleyes: I have no chance of it being left on the road so that's good enough for me.
