The wife wants me to obtain a PLB for my extended trips on the bike

(for those of you who aren't familiar, its a GPS device that when activated alerts rescue services that your life is in danger and sends your exact location to them, anywhere on earth: )

I'm aware of the above product, but is anyone aware of a maps and directions GPS (Zumo 550, etc) that has the PLB included in the unit? Seems like it would be something that outdoor adventurers would need, but I can't find anything like that.

It seems silly (and expensive) to me to carry one GPS unit and a PLB

I saw something like that advertised last week on the Survivor Man show. It was a combined PLB with a Sat phone. Can't remember the name of it at the moment though.

I did find this though: http://www.cospas-sarsat.org/MainPages/indexEnglish.htm

They have links to various manufacturers of PLB devices. I'm sure one of them will have what you need.

That unit uses EPIRB, which is common on boats that go offshore. You register the unit so they know who it belongs to. Sending the GPS signal makes it a lot faster to find your location than just the EPIRB beacon alone.

Doesn't seem like there's anything available for much less.

Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs)

PLBs are at the top of the food chain for satellite based emergency rescue devices. Their sole purpose is notifiy search and rescue that you need help and your location (the built in GPS is only for use by the PLB and a secondary means of obtaining your location coordinates). You can learn more about PLBs and rent them for around $50/week at PLBRentals.com. If you use the promotional code of KEVIN it will save you $10/week.
