Thinking of getting the new 3G IPhone with its enhanced GPS capabilities but don't think it would be smart to mount it. However, I could just put it in the tank bag or jacket pocket and listen to the directions with some ear buds. I need a new phone and this could save me a lot of money over getting something like a Zumo. Also it would be safer than looking at a GPS screen. Would this be a viable solution or is it important to see and hear our GPS?

Personally, I always prefer being able to quickly glance at the GPS to see how far the next turn is... spoken instructions can help, but a quick glance can usually clear up confusing instructions (Montreal's freeways especially!).

Just my 2 cents.

I'm definitely planning to get a new iPhone. I love the idea of ipod, phone, and gps all in one package, but like you I'm not so sure about mounting it out in the weather. Does it speak direction info? I'll be interested to see if it has the kind of routing and waypoint features found on a mapping gps unit.
