very easy to do . Each of my race bikes (GSXR/SV) use the GP pattern. Just mark the position on the shifter on the shaft( in case you wish to return it to factory) and flip the arm. You can adjust the lever position but loosening the 2 nuts and turning the "screw" to raise or lower the shifter to your liking.

A Touratech folding shift lever will do exactly that. It fits directly on the shifter shaft.

Yes, I know how it is done, my SV is setup that way, and it has become a pattern I prefer

it does not look as simple on the V-Strom, the linkage rod comes down at a steep angle, not near perpendicular like the SV, flipping the lever on the shaft appears as though it might severly stress the limits of the linkage motion and be cause for false neutrals, mossed shifts etc.

I have to check out the Touratech shifter that greywolf speaks of

what are the disadvantages of going to a linkageless shifter , will potentially the shift shaft bushings etc. wear quicker, am I looking to create an eventual oil leak ?

Not a problem. Heim joint links enable the shift lever to be placed in any position and adjusted in fine increments.

That shifter does change the pattern on the 650, but NOT on the 1000.

Isn't that what you are asking about? The two linkages are not the same.

That's why Touratech says the shifter will fit the 1000, but is not for the 650. It's not that it won't fit, it will, but it'll change the shift pattern(on the 650)

Dang. Screwed up again. I even looked up the part fiche to make sure the 1000 also used linkage but didn't see the shaft connection was up on one bike and down on the other. It was indeed past posts on the shift pattern reversing on the 650 that got me started.
