This is my 1st post here and I thank you for your responses. I have an '02 Goldwing with 94,000 miles and I am considering going to the V-strom. The Wing is great but I don't do much long distance travelling any more. I am looking for something a little smaller and easier to handle around town but can still handle the occasional 1000 mile weekend. I am 55 yrs old, 6'6", 200 lbs. with some neck and back arthritis. I am curious about the long distance comfort of the V for someone my size. What additions or modifications would you suggest to help make it as good of a long distance bike as it can be? I have admired the V for a while but never ridden one..... Thanks for your insight.

I am 55, back and neck issues. I know you asked about the Vee, but if you want lighter don't dismiss the wee. Comfort is pretty individual so... your mileage may vary. I do about 12,000 km per year and half of that or better is long trips (3000 to 7000 km). I find the bike very comfortable. That said, I am installing different bars and risers to help with wrist issues, I installed a Cal Sci windshield to improve the airflow/reduce buffetting and will slightly modify the seat to fit my butt. I ride with a bunch of sport tourers with double the displacement of the wee and have no trouble keeping up or staying out front of them.

The Strom has pretty relaxed, neutral ergonomics in stock form and is quite roomy compared to most bikes. A number of long-legged folks have installed a peg lowering kit, and highway pegs are an option for stretching out on longer rides. There are taller seats available, or a stock seat can be modified. Bar risers/backs or different bars if you need to change the reach. There are quite a few taller windscreens from Givi, Calsci, Cee Bailey, and others. A Madstad windshield mount helps a lot to tune the airflow with any screen. Use the Google search box at the top of the page to get more info on specific mods.

As Yak said, don't rule out the Wee either. The ergos are identical (except the stock seat is lower than that of the Vee), and there are plenty of riders your size or heavier who say it has all the power they need. It has the advantage of a much smoother engine out of the box, and available ABS.

I think smaller, lighter is better most of the time.

66 years old, 6ft, 230 pounds. I have some experience with a Gold Wing. Several years ago, my wife and I rode a friends Wing from Florida to Pennsylvania via the smoky mountains. Some interstate, which the Wing was perfect for, and lots of small, mountain roads which the Wing was ok, but far from perfect. I now have a 09 650. It seems to me your decision will be made by the type of riding you want to do. Two up, both bikes will work, though the Wing is better, slab, Wing again. Packing everything under the sun, Wing. Curvy roads, some dirt, difficult places to park, backing up, all the things where weight and maneuverability come into play, the Wee or the Vee. All three bikes have plenty of power for every kind of riding. Cost, Wee/Vee for sure. Best forum, Wee/Vee. Try a Wee or a Vee. If you don’t like it, they are not hard to re sell. You are only young once.

Well you have arrived at the right place for this question. I also have an 02 1800 Wing & have a Wee as a second bike. I am 6'3 & 205 lbs. 34-36 inseam. My wing has 80 + on the clock. So I know exactly where you are coming from with this question. First you really don't have to have the V the wee makes plenty of power to move you vast distances. I have 50K on my wee & when I don't take the wife along the Wee is my weapon of choice. Mods to accommodated your stature. 1st would be a tall givi screen or a cal sci. 2nd would be a Russel day long saddle. The saddle will move you higher in the saddle by about 2 inches and it has the same shape as the saddle on your Wing. The saddle is a little over 400 dollars not like a Russel for you wing which is like 1000.3rd take the worn out driver foot pegs off your wing, replace them & put the used pegs onto your Wee the fit right on with no mods & give you another 1/2 to 3/4 inches more legroom. Next is a 16 tooth countersprocket to lower the RMP on the highway. Get a givi box for the rear & a pair of rok straps for a duffel on the rear seat & yur in business to go antwhere in the country. You will find the Wee a very light & comfortable bike and very different from the Wing in it;s ease to ride. The light bike is just a joy to ride. GET THE WEE. You already have a big bike. Run my Wee at 85 all day

Another note is that the fuel tank is huge for a bike that gets 50+ mpg. I routinely run 275 miles on a tank. Also heated grips & a Heated Jacket can be run easily. I see you live in TX so that won't really matter. 7 degrees here this morning it matters here.

Do I understand you only want one bike? Is it an option to have more than one bike?

I have three bikes, for in-town commuting and all other short hops and some trails I use a KLR650--its a revelation for a tall guy. I have mine set up for my height, I can barely flatfoot with a 35" inseam. Its the most comfortable bike I have ever owned now that I have the tall guy mods.

I have a Vee also set up very tall and it is capable of at least one 875 mile day (a couple of years ago).

I have a '77 'Wing used for the fun of it, also set up tall, I use it as an antique for shows and for the 'relic' status--it isn't the best for much, but it looks really good --just because its fun to have more than one or two bikes.

I don't think I could be as happy with just one bike.

I went from the Strom to the Wing and I prefer the Strom for comfort. It took a while before I could spend more than 2 hours at one time on the Wing.

I had ridden nothing but Goldwings since I started biking. 1984 GL1200, 1993 GL1500 and a 2001 GL1800. They are the best bike for long paved roads !

I wanted a bike that is good for paved as well as gravel roads and switched to a 2007 DL650 Vstrom. It is the best decision I have made concerning motorcycling. It is more fun, more manouverable, very comfortable, easy on fuel, much much less expensive. The only thing I miss is a true cruise control. I have added GPS, FM radio and satellite radio, plus trunk and panniers which gives me more space that the Goldwings had. I have had NO regrets at all in changing. The 650 is plenty powerful enough. I am 5 feet, 230 pounds !

I currently have two 03s in the garage, one a wing, the other a Strom.

Of course there are many differences, they are miles apart as far as bikes go.

A couple of the biggest differences between the two is height and riding position. Swinging a leg over won't happen easily on either bike (especially with a top box), but the seat height of the Strom is UP THERE.
You'll find that the seated position from the Wing (cruiser stance) to the Strom (standard) is way different. When seated on the strom the controls are below you, while on the wing--ahead. Though the Strom is tall, your sitting position will place your feet under your hips when stopped, not so much with the wing...

You might think about a Wee instead of a Vee especially if you're not doing much 2-up riding. The 650 probably has just as much, or probably more, acceleration than your Wing, and it's cheaper and smoother than the 1000.

For mods I'd go with an aftermarket seat (I like the Corbin), a Madstad adjustable windshield bracket and a larger windshield, a fork brace (really plants the front end on a Wee - not as much on a Vee), a center stand, and maybe bar risers.

The one Wing I've run with ran very well. In a straight away dragrace we were neck and neck.

Go with the V

Contrary to what some people are saying to you, I wouldn't consider the wee for one minute. For ease of operation, fun and pure comfort buy a Dl1000. It will be the best bike you've ever owned. The 650 is not nearly strong enough nor sprung well enough to compare to your Goldwing. Do yourself a favor and move up to the best all-around (and most comfortable) motorcycle ever--the DL1000!

Went from a Valkyrie (Wing offspring) to the Vee with no regrets. Not the highway bike the Honda is but makes up for it with versatility. Will easily handle 500 mile days but also shines on the backroads. Comfortable riding position for taller riders in addition to handlebar / peg lowering options for custom fit. Approximately 400 lbs lighter than the Wing. Only downside I'm aware of is that you will give up some weather protection. Just my $.02
