Hello,

My name is Kevin, from Green Bay, WI and planning to ride the CO BDR in a couple of weeks. I am on a '15 650 XT and will be travelling with a buddy on an F800GSA. We just ordered our tires for this ride (In interest of not a OIL / TIRE thread, I will withhold the brand :laugh2: )

Initially we were going to change the tires prior to leaving WI, although am now hoping someone is near the route to the Four Corners Monument with a place that we could change the tires at? We plan to get Denver as quick (super slab) as possible then to 285, 50 , 550 and 160 into monument.

Being able to change tires just prior to starting would be a great benefit as the monument is 1500+ miles from our start.

If you are able / willing to a couple guys (2) out, please PM. Thank in advance for your consideration.

Hey Kevin!

I ran the lower half of the COBDR in 2014. Incredibly scenic. I may have already missed you, but I'm happy to share any info I have as well as hook you up with a guy who does motorcycle tire changes for $40-$60 in the Boulder, CO area. If you get some time in this area, lmk and we can run a trail nearby! I also have some basic tools (sorry, just sold my motorcycle tire changer) if you need, and you are welcome to camp in the back yard :).

Hey Gary-

Thanks so much for the post. Unfortunately for me, work schedule has changed and now I will not have the time off needed to complete this ride. This does not mean that the ride is out, just for this year. I am looking at my schedule for next year and trying to determine when it will work in.

I have purchased a set of spoons and will be attempting a change here in a controlled environment. I am not sure whether it will be a viable option, although we will figure out an option.

what Bike do you ride? Was it too big fo rthe terrain of the half you rode?

Sorry to hear about the change in plans. It happens. I rode a 2012 VStrom Adventure 650. It wasn't too big, even with all my camping gear for 8 days. There were a time or two a little more ground clearance would have been nice, but other than that, it performed very well. Not one loose bolt after it all, either. I met some guys on KTM 990s and they felt like those were too big, but I also know a guy who says his BMW 1200gs did fine on it. I hadn't been on dirt a lot before that, so it pushed my skills on some of the chunky, steep switchbacks, but it was manageable.

Sorry to hear that you have to put it off a year, I did the "best" part of it Sept 2014, from Buena Vista to Delores. To give you another idea, you could do it north to south, then your tires would only have 1100 miles on them, or change them in Cheyenne. That would allow you to go downhill on the west side of Ophir Pass, they say over on ADVRider that it's pretty torn up this year.

Performance Cycle in Centennial will do it for $30 if you bring them rims off the bike. I've ridden over there a handful of times and pulled wheels at the front door parking.
