Hi all, reading the forums now for a few weeks, great feedback from all you stromtroppers. My brother bought an '08 DL650, I had to ride it home for him for 40Km, loved it. I decided there and then I was going to replace my second bike, an ST1100 with a VStrom.

Dilemma set in.....I do really like the pre 2012 model, however, I love the look of the new one. So in January I plan to get either a new, new, if the discount is right or get a 2012/2013 year with serious discount.

So he're the questions. Seeing the long term feedback on the Wee being so good, I am not seeing much long term feedback, bonuses, issues, servicing and maintenance costs etc on the Glee....

I know its only "2" years but anyone out there running the longest/farthest with feed back?
Is the 2012 not a new revised engine?
Is there new breaks?
Is there new shocks?
Whats the real difference between the Wee and the Glee?
Are parts interchangeable? (Sprockets, hand guards, exhaust parts etc)
Any engine issues, oil issues, seals etc....

Also when I do plan to buy I am looking at the Expedition model as I want to fit my own side cases, as I have read some bad things about Suzukis OEM ones. Is this true?

The SFV650 Gladius was introduced in 2009 and was short lived. The SFV650 is no longer called Gladius. Since this is a V-Strom forum and you mentioned an Expedition model. I'll assume you are looking for information on the 2012+ DL650 which is nicknamed Glee by some due to the Gladius derived engine. Some threads on the subject are:

You think with all that reading.......

Yes I do mean the new 2012 Glee but for some reason I had it in my head as the Gladius...DOH!!!!

I had a Gladius and found the engine bordering on snatchy at low revs / throttle settings. Exhaust noise plus intake roar gives a much better aural experience when accelerating. I suspect that the Gladius servicing will be marginally cheaper due to less plastic to remove. The Eastern Beaver 3CS system fits either bike. HTH.

To keep it simple I've never talked to anyone with a DL650, new or old that didn't love it......I know that doesn't really answer your question, but it's just the way it is..I recently bought a 2013 Yamaha FJR1300, that thing is a blast, but I got back on the DL and thought "what a fun bike this is" If I could only have one, it would be the DL 650................TD

I am sure someone has more mileage than me but I'm at almost 47,000 miles on my 2012 and have over 125,000 miles on my 2006.

The only real issue I had with my 2012 was having to replace the rear wheel bearings at around 40,000 or so miles. I am sure this was the result of hitting a big puddle (at least 6 inches deep and 20 or 30 feet long while travelling a bit over 50mph) of what I thought was mud but which turned out to be dilute cement. The cement got into just about everything and I think got into the rear wheel bearings. (On some of the back roads I ride on it appears dump trucks and cement trucks take these deserted roads as good places to clean out the truck.)

I haven't heard anything to say the brakes should be better on the 2012 than on the 2006 (yes it has ABS but that is a different issue) but in my opinion they are noticeably better stock than what the 2006 was stock. I think they are better then my 2006 with EBC HH pads.

The suspension feels noticeably better.. So much so that I don't feel compelled to change the 2012. (I had changed both the rear spring/shock unit as well as the front springs and added intimitators on the 2006.)

The 2012 engine feels more refined than the 2006. It has noticeably more torque in the low and mid range and has more hp overall. It seems to be more relaxed at highway speeds.. So much so that I don't feel the need to make the front sprocket larger like I did on the 2006. The 2012 is more responsive.. It just feels better.

I have tracked every drop of fuel that went into both bikes. My 2012 has averaged 10% better mileage than my 2006 so even through the tank on the 2006 is 10% larger than on the 2012 my projected tank range has been essentially the same even though my riding has changed in a way that should see me using more fuel.

Since I learned how to make chains last the chain life seems about the same on both in the 40,000 to 50,000 mile range. (if you do what everyone else does and/or follow what is in the manual expect somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 mile chain life.) My OEM tire lasted longer on the 2012 than did the original tire on the 2006 and it seems my Tourances seem to last bit longer as well but it is too early to say if this will always be true.

I really like the dash and the trip computer on the 2012. Being a bit of a nerd having the fuel mileage and temperature displays satisfies some of my desire to know things.

Last June I spent a couple of weeks in Greece on my honeymoon. I rented a 2011 DL650 and my new wife and I spent about 8 days riding it around the island. It reminded me as to how good the original DL650 is. I like my 2012 much more than the earlier models but I would happily still be riding my 2006 or any year DL650 if there was no new version like my 2012.

I have a 2012 Adventure that I purchased in April 2102. It has one great deficiency.....I neglected to purchase the extended riding time option!:headbang:

The bike is constantly staring at me begging to go for ride in spite of my schedule.

I recently ran on to a fellow COG member that jumped to a 1200 BMW and was regretting the decision. He had experience on both the V and Wee's and said if he had to do it again he would buy the Wee and ride until the savings was gone!:mrgreen:

As far as the stock adventure bags I was ready to pull the trigger when I purchased and didn't have the time to sort through brackets, bag choice etc. I am happy with what I have and have no complaints on fit, finish, water tightness. The locks are chintzy, but manageable and by the time you cobble together other options you will probably blow through the OEM cost in both actual dollars and time frogging around making things fit. IMO.

One other thing is that my wife bought a used 2009 Gladius in May of 2012. We have done a few nice trips with both bikes as well as many Sunday or weekend rides. The Gladius is a wonderful bike and is a blast to ride. I'm not crazy about the nickname that some use on the 2012+ DL650 (and wasn't crazy about the nickname of the earlier version but at least that had some reason behind it.)

Had an 05 1000 for 4 wonderful years then got the sport touring machine bug and bought a 2008 Concours 14. I enjoyed that for 4 years as well, but everytime I saw a Strom looking all good with its panniers/bash plate/engine guards....and all the other goodies, I was longing for another again "I also like to explore allot". So now I am back on a 2006 1000 and loving the hell out of it. :thumbup:

I purchased a 2012 ADV "glee" last june. I have put almost 20,000 kms on it and have nary a single issue with it. Great on fuel, stock cases work fine.... are they perfect? May be not... Are you??? Yes the locks are a little finiky... oh well, there has to be at least one downside to an otherwise wonderful motorcycle. Remember that no matter what we /you/I ride, there will always be some compromise with something. This, imho, is a great bike. Fun to ride, easy to service, cheap to maintain, enough power to get into trouble.... What more could you ask for?

I think he's just joking about not having the time to ride that he would like to have.
