Gang quick question. On the cusp of buying a set of Givi Engine Guards and from the board here I've deduced that
1) they work in the event of a drop
2) the bolts they supply are crap
3) it helps to replace those bolts ASAP
4) some people report vibration?

Has anyone foudn out what causes this vibration and or how to prevent/fix the problem?

I recently installed mine and don't have any vibration at all. Gotta have the special touch 8)

Some of the posts complaining about the bolts seem to relate to the installation method. Only take out the stock bolts on one one side, then bolt up the Givi to that side (loosely to allow aligning the front tube joint). Then do the other side. Tension the front tube joint last. First get the front joint aligned and together, then torque down the side bolts. Return to the front joint and use pressure on both side bars to bring together the front joint (two sturdy friends are usefull, or a length of rope and a rudimentary understanding of physics and knots). Finally, tighten the bolt at the front tube joint, then release the pressure on the bars.

If you take out the stock bolts from both sides before bolting on the Givi (or any other manufacturer's bars) you allow the engine to shift in relation to the frame, thus mis-aligning the frame and engine bolt holes. When you try and run in the new bolts you will have resistance, stripping or a complete inability to start the bolt depeding on how much the engine has shifted. Easy to round out the bolt heads or strip a bolt if the holes are out of alignment. This is not a problem related to the quality of the bolt...

Also make sure you have good quality hex sockets in the correct size. Cheap ones are made to sloppy dimensional tolerances and contribute to trashed bolt heads.

No vibration from mine in 10,000 + km. I have not dropped the bike so I can't speak to their protective qualities....

I had no problems with the bolts and no vibration whatsoever. I think I read about some change in design from earlier models.

I just purchased Kurt1305's givi's last week, last Sunday afternoon, I logged on 200mi. of various riding and can report no vibrations.

diddo what Twinfan said, very well put, also pay attention to the torque as you are screwing into aluminum theads! I used a floor jack under mine just for a little insurance.

Maybe I'm dense, but that makes no sense to me. If you install all of the bolts loosely, then tighten the front first, you don't need sturdy friends or ropes... in fact for me it all bolted right up- no problems with the center joint or the side bolts.
