Hi All,

I picked up a E52 over the weekend and it has the light kit installed but after having a look at those little lights in back I can't imagine them to be very bright.

Before I wire it up, has anyone been successful in swapping them out for LEDs or are those bulbs okay?

The bulbs are OK at night, but pretty much useless during the day.
Mine failed after only a week of pothole dodging.

If you have the cash, I'd swap them for the LED module.

I thought the new bags came with an LED setup :confused: I'm awaiting delivery of the proper top case bracket before I can see what mine are. I'm assuming they are LED's :confused:

The stock lights are less than impressive, and the electrical contacts on the case/rack won't survive very long either.

I'm in the process of replacing the Givi lights with either hyperlites or individual bright LEDS. If you pull the reflectors, the hyperlites will fit in there. What I don't know yet is if the LEDs I plan to use are as bright as I want.

Of course, hyperlites would be the best choice if you aren't an electronic tinkerer. You can't juts swap out the bulbs. You have to figure out the value of a current limiting resistor, etc.

I'll be using one of the Gerbing style coaxial connectors to supply power to the case.

Thanks, Heavy. That's a good tool.

My problem is that I'm a component-level tech and dangerous enough to be repairing electronic equipment for a living for the past 30 odd years. :rolleyes:

In the case of the Givi light fixture, there are 6 lamps and the LEDs I picked up are rated at 2.2V/20ma. This is convenient since 6 x 2.2V = 13.2 volts so each LED can have an optimum voltage drop across it if you wire them in series. A bit less than the 14.5V the bike usually puts out, but I'll be playing around to see how much I can push them.

Givi LED goodness

I found this link last night with ready made kits for some Givi's. I guess all the expense is in the controller but some nice features, like acting as turn signals along with stop lights with the proper kit.

I may still try to penny-tech my own but it's nice to know there is a fall back when I screw up :D

I would have never thought to trying the Hyperlights in place of the stockers, that might be my first attempt. I'll also have a look at those Gerbing connectors.

The Gerbing extension cables are cheap at $5 each and when you cut them in half, you get each half you need.

I just installed 6 individual "super brite" red LEDs in place of the incandescent lamps on one Givi circuit board. The wiring scheme of the circuit board is parallel and the Givi reflector aligns the LEDs nicely, even though it has no value as a reflector due to the narrow viewing angle of the LEDs.

I'm going to go with this since I already have one done and it looks to be bright enough on the test bench.

I have a vacuum powered desoldering tool which made taking the incandescent lamps out very easy, although the soldering job on them was very crappy.
