Anyone ever set this up before... ordered this from TwistedThrottle - thought there would be better directions. I think I will be able to figure it out, but wondering if anyone has done it and has any tips... it seems that the crash bars must be installed (one at a time) before the skid plate can go on... certainly this is the case for the SW-Motech bars +skid plate (I presume this is the same deal for the GIVI bars...???

If anyone has pointers/tips/etc. it would be greatly appreciated!

Since I was doing a search, and this post came up, I thought I would bring this thread back.

I am having the same problem. The directions are not that good. Was wondering if anyone had this same set up and hopefully some photos.

The SW-Motech adpater kit is not clear to me how it mounts to the Givi crash bars either (no directions for this at all).

The isometric drawing for the skid plate it self does not show both sides of the bike or how it mounts to the rear.

Any help would be appreciated.

Same problem

I just picked up a used 2007 DL 650 with the Givi crash bar and promptly ordered the SW Motech skid plate. It was quite interesting to discover that there was absolutely no directions on how to install the adapter. The rest of the directions left a lot to be desired but I eventually figured it out.

Maybe I am not too bright but I discovered that I needed to put the bike on the centerstand instead of the kickstand as the skid plate attached to the bolts securing the kickstand.

I also picked up stronger bolts to connect the skid plate to the adaptor as the ones supplied are quite scrawny.

Tomorrow I will try take a picture. Why is it so difficult to provide good directions???

That would be great!

I have figured out most everything except for that adapter plate. I can't believe they couldn't thow in a diagram or something.

This is my last modification for a few months.

Just did this install

I just added the givi, sw motech skid plate and adapter last weekend.

Fortunately did not put it off as my bike was dumped in the parking lot by high winds Thursday. Givi bars scratched, lost blinker and bent bar end.

To the topic at hand, be sure not to use the side stand as those bolt for the back of the skid plate mount hold the kickstand on. Removing these two bolts were the hardest part, they require lots of torque to remove. I started on the side kickstand for some reason, and could not get them out. So i put it on the centerstand so i could add a longer lever for cranking. They finally broke loose and i unscrewed them. To my horror the side kickstand came off. Fortunately i had moved to the centerstand. I assmued the bolts were there specifically for attaching a skid plate. WRong.

I reused these bolts, as I am not sure if the skid plate is suppose to come with longer bolts. I bought it used and the owner did not send any longer bolts. Anyone know if the back three bolts are provide with the skid plate or was it ok to install with existing bike hardware?

There were no directions for the skid plate adapter. I found a good picture of what they look like installed on the twisted throttle web site.

Download the photo and blow it up. It gives you a good idea how to install it.

It appears the plate for the adapter will bend to conform with the bar when cranking down on the ubar nuts.

The skid plate bolts on the front did not flush mount very nicely against the spacers IMO. It seemed to get them to mount flush, the top of the skid plate also was bent.

The rubber grommet should be installed in the front and rear mounting holes to isolate vibration for mounting hardware. The rubber will stick out both sides of the hole.

I can do pictures tomorrow if you like.

Guys, thanks very much for these posts. No need to spend time taking photos, this info is more than sufficient. Now that i have the concept, it's just a matter of going out and wrestling with the bike to get it on.

Well I would like to see pictures if anyone has time. I will post mine. Mostly interested in the plate mount to the givi and skidplate from the side.

Or if anyone did a homemade kit (which is what I wished I had done) as the kit was 37 delivered. Might save someone else a few dollars.

Can't let this slide due to the fact this irked me so much and I see others have gone through the same thing. I posted this on another thread here previously however I do not want people purchasing this from Twisted Throttle to have the expectations I had and be disappointed. Interesting in that I also tried to post a comment on the Twisted Throttle product page for this item under reviews and they did not post it:

I just installed my GIVI guards and skid plate, the adapter from Twisted Throttle was junk, I put it on anyways, I also put the top edge of the skid plate under the bracket where the GIVI bars bolt together in the front. This is so the weight would be bearing upon the bracket and not the wimpy "U" bolts if you ever actually contact anything with the skidplate. While this lowers the skid plate and reduces your clearance slightly, no more than an extra 1/8th of an inch, (I am also installing 1" raising links to improve clearance) it is a far superior mounting structurally in my opinion. Something to keep in mind. Maybe A Vicious Cycle has a different adapter. I actually had to bend the top edge of my skidplate to make it fit and it is supposed to be GIVI / Motech specific (NOT!) also Twisted Throttle short shipped me 4 washers and there were no instructions. I had to install by way of example from the photo provided on their website for the part, and it does not look or fit the same, believe me :thumbdown:

I must have spent the better part of the day trying to figure out this install, until I saw this:

The two plated are butted together, and the bolt goes through.
I reversed the order of the plates, so that the skid plate is to the rear of the adapter.
With the grommet installed, I inserted the sleeve that's enclosed with the kit, and installed the bolts from the front.
the length of the sleeve makes it possible to use the enclosed bolts.
