Well, found more dirt to ride today.

Dirty dirt ride - Motorcycling trip | EveryTrail

It was a mix of dirt, gravel, jeep trail, and a little bit of :jawdrop:

The first few sections were still wet and slick from rain yesterday, so I took those slow. The last few sections were hard-packed and dry, so I sped up a bit :hurray:

Found out that the Wee doesn't like washboard sections covered in pea gravel on a tight turn. :yikes:

All in all, kept it upright and rolling, remembered that brakes on gravel = and to stay loose and let the throttle control the bike.

Big fun.

Sweet ride! I have a good friend that lives in Linden up on Blue Mountain, and have taken my Wee all around where you were. It's nice riding, even only on the black top

Good stuff! I play out that way all the time... Fiery Run Rd is one of my favorites! We need a Northern VA V-Strom gathering!

Try Rock Hill Mill Rd. next time you are in The Plains and have time to head north on Halfway Rd.

Also Swift Shoals Rd. is a bit further north and runs along the Shenandoah....pea gravel that turns to some dirt and then primitive pavement ... laid back but still fun ;)

This is all good information - I'm in Arlington, and the bulk of my "dirt experience" comes from riding thru construction zones.
Thanks for the tips - I'm going to try some of these roads!
(probably very slowly)

Happy to help!

My Wee has to make the trek in to beautiful downtown Merrifield every weekday so we're almost neighbors. I've been sorely tempted to test out some of the dirt sections they have going on with the 495/66 interchange rework on the way home. :)

You probbly know this route already, but for two rewarding and accessible dirt roads, get on the 66 out to Manassas and exit on Sudley Road heading North into the battlefield (exitv 47B, just prior to the main Sudley Road South exit into Manassas). At the intersection at Rte.29 with the Stone House, go straight and continue many miles NW through Catharpin until you get to Rte.15 (a 7-11 will be on your right). Go straight again. Once on the other side of the 15, Sudley road changes to Waterfall Rd and finally you're in for a treat...after about 4 miles you'll find Bull Run Mountain road which is an uphill, long semi-windy dirt and gravel road that follows the ridgeline. Good stuff. Heads into Landmark Rd and beware, turning right on Landmark Rd, it's paved but changes quickly back to hardpacked dirt and gravel.

If you miss the turn onto Bull Run Mountain Rd, about a mile and a half further, right after Creels Lane (which I don't recommend since it's home to a very fast and remarkably dedicated border collie, and isn't a through road, so you get to meet the collie twice), is Bust Head Rd, which despite the name is the same kind groovy thing almost as Bull Run Mountain Rd. Both roads lead to excellent exploration territory beyond.

Just recently tried out Morgan's Mill Rd which is a steep-ish downhill dirt road that heads down from the top of Mt. Weather Emergency Operations Center (Mt Weather Rd). Thanks to the recent rains it was a tad exciting heading downhill in mud with ABS and worn street-biased Battlewings :yikes:  ...take 'er slow.

Also while the map is out...

Next up I've got my eye on Aaron Mountain Rd out by Massanova, south of Flint Hill. Looks like a hoot, can't wait to see it.

Woodstock Tower Rd. is on my local bucket list but will be after I get fresh hoops and an ABS switch.

Happy trails and maybe see ya out there sometime

Hey, I was just out in that neck of the woods on Sunday for my advrider tag-o-rama grab:

ADVrider - View Single Post - Northern VA Tag-o-rama!

It was a big foggy for my tastes, but it gave me some much needed gravel experience. No ABS on my 2007, but I can relate to heading downhill in unexpected conditions. :)

I'm game! Should we do a RTE someplace?

I'm going to have to try some more of those roads. Really is a good area. I got yelled at on the one section of gravel road because it was a "private community". The road was fun though.

I'm game for a RTE as well. Just not this Sunday. Got company coming. The weekend after that?

Don't know if you have a fork brace, but it makes a huge improvement when riding on dirt/gravel....if you do, then nevermind!

Wish I had roads like that closeby!

My Embarrassing Confession: I do not know what RTE means (Renault Technical Expert? Ready To Eat?). But if it's something like a get-together that'd be a good weekend for it, what with this coming weekend being Mother's Day and all.

Might maybe wanna post something in the regional events section? I do most all of my riding and exploring alone so am no good at arranging these things but would certainly be up for hangin' out and tagging along.

RTE = Ride To Eat : pick a restaurant, we all ride to it, have some grub, shoot the breeze, and perhaps ride somewhere else afterwards.

Great plan, I usually fall in that category as well as my riding time is scarce, but with enough advance notice, I could set aside an afternoon for something like this. :)

Geoff - I want to thank you for posting that link...been reading through the thread, that's some great stuff! I'm very tempted to jump in and play, if we don't have a NoVA get-together, at least there's a different kind of opportunity to get in more great riding!

 :cheers2:

Hey Stoopy, it was good running into you. I posted up the tag on the other forum. Didn't know your handle on that one. An RTE is definitely in order for next weekend.

Hey bud! Good running into you too - I'm still laughing as to how that worked out, small small world eh?! The wife dug the story when I got home and told her. Been runnin' ever since though!

I'm registered by the same name over at ADV as here, I just haven't posted much. I'll jump into the tag thread since you were kind enough to post that picture ;)

Yep we gotta post up something for next weekend and make plans...I'll put my thinking cap on and put a post in the events section tomorrow, maybe we can get 1 or 2 more troopers to join in maybe.

Awesome!
