Need to order a new chain and sprockets for my new to me v. Is there a common gearing change, or is stock gearing better? Most riding will be commuting and weekend getaways.

Sprockets - 17 tooth front 43 tooth rear – DID Gold X-ring chain with 1 extra link.
This works great for my Vee; makes 6th gear useable.

Take a look at the available bike config files. The DL1000 is there. GearCalc draws a MPH vs RRM graph for each gear. This can let you play the 'what if' game before you buy the sprockets.

Also... I haven't run this on a Windows 7 machines and I would mind knowing if it will run on that OS.

Is a rubber mounted stock replacement front sprocket worth the money? I'm worried about running a solid front sprocket.

16/43 and alternatives

Search for 16/43 or 16f/43r on this and other Strom forums. This is an extremely popular change because it matches the engine better, gives you more grunt at lower RPMS, and makes 6th gear practical at higher (interstate highway) speeds. Another benefit is that this ratio lets you can keep the OEM chain if you're making the switch early in the life of the bike, but that may not be a consideration in your case. I have 16/43, love it since I go on fire roads and dirt roads a lot. Works perfectly with 5th and sixth in the 60 to 80 mph range, too.

When the current sprockets and chains are toast, I'm thinking of going to 17/46 with a 530 size chain vs. the OEM 525 if it can be done. This would almost perfectly match the gearing of 16/43 but avoids any possibility of wearing down the swingarm protector prematurely. Plus I like the theoretically slightly increased lifespan of larger-radius sprockets. My first move would be to call Blair at SV.
