Clutch lever switch bypassing?

After raising my bars my bike didn't start anymore. I found the problem being the switch on the (gear) clutch lever it only works in position 1 (it is not pressed in any other position setting of the lever dial).

My Q is thus: Would there be any problem if I just join the two cables together so that switch is bypassed?

What gear lever is this that you are talking about?

Raising the bars should have no effect on anything down near the gear lever, unless you have raised it too far and the clutch interlock switch has come off which is underneath the left bar, is that what you mean?

If it is, I would not bypass it at all, it is there as a safety feature.

That switch is there to stop you accidently starting the bike in gear and consequently launching you and your bike towards something potentially nasty. As such, in your position I would not bypass said switch rather I would be trying to get it to work how it used to pre bar rise.

The only safe-t feature that I can see is that it stops one from starting the bike in gear without the clutch pulled in. The neutral light on the dash also indicates this so is that big a safe-t issue. I normally use setting 3 only the clutch & now after the raise it doesn't work anymore.

Xwagga...How are things in SA?

I believe the clutch lever switch is non-adjustable, but maybe if you loosened the screws and forced it to go closer to the lever (outboard) it could make better contact. Retighten the screws, of course.

And check to see if you can gain any slack in the wire run from the clutch lever switch to the frame...could be the wires are stretched and pulling the switch away (or the wires broke altogether).

For some reason, bypassing (jumpering) that switch can induce driveability problems, as Greywolf has often noted.

I didn't look at your profile, so I'm not sure if you have a 650 or 1000. I have a 1000 and would need to remove my handguards to look at the switch installation. And seeing that I just got home from work at 23:30, I have a row of beers to drink first. Hope you understand, everybody has their own set of priorities!

Good luck, and write back anything that you find!

No big & pressing issues here in SA, all is going well.

I also have the 1000 & did remove the switch & replace it as suggested but without solving the problem. I can't see why now all of a sudden there should be an issue as the whole unit moves together when moved (had to move the unit as the cables was to short to just raise the bar.

Enjoy the beers.

I'm off for a nap though it's only 7am (been up since 3am with plumbers working in my roof & now very tired).

:confused:Enjoy the nap. I'm enjoying my beers.

But, shouldn't plumbers work in the basement?

Just kidding. Good luck with the bike...

In SA hotwater geysers are mostly mounted in the roof. Mine burst yesterday and had to be replaced, so they came out early this morning as my wife had a huge battle with the home insurance company & told them she wanted it fixed before the brake of dawn - so hence the early wake-up call. I was happy with their reply of during this morning but she was amendment that before dawn as they the money clockwork & she customer & customer is king and blabla bla bla & I had to wake up to sit with the problem (not that it would have mattered if the geyser was odd for a week or more as half the house runs on another hotwater geyser) :headbang:

They have to come back later the week to repair the ceiling and repaint where i had water damage & repair the build in cupboard underneath the geyser (don't know why the builder (contractor) put the geyser above the damn cupboard.

I getting sleep is difficult as it was my son's birthday yesterday & we gave him a keyboard & his been at it since I got in bed now-now :headbang::furious::headbang:
