In 1983 or 1984 I purchased a brand new Suzuki GSX750ESD. One thing about that bike that I have never forgotten was that on the dash was a gear indicator. At the time the motorcycling press slated Suzuki for having this "unnecessary and distracting information on the display", and it was dropped.
Bikes are not like cars in that the ratios are much closer together and there is no gear lever to look at or to touch to confirm the gear that you are in. I, like many others, can be seen at the lights booting the lever a few times to ensure that you are in first, or on the highway looking for another gear just to confirm that you are in top.
Nearly 30 years and 30 motorcycles later I still remember the 750's party piece and how handy it occasionally was.
Perhaps Suzuki might consider bringing it back. It would certainly influence my ride choice.
