Gas Smells Like Diesel

My last tank of gas smells like diesel and my bike started running like garbage.
I put some techron in and went for an extended ride tonight to burn it up.
The bike started running better after I burned up half the tank.
Ill refill with non ethanol and more techron and see how it goes.
ive heard that diesel contamination of gas happens and can cause issues.
Has anyone experienced this too?

It happened to me on a former KTM. Rural petrol station with the pumps wrongly coloured. Fortunately I twigged that it was wrong before starting the bike. I drained both tanks but on start up the bike still ran poorly for a while.

It’s gas, just smells of diesel. I’ve been told it can be contamination from the tanker trucks or the refinery.
Were having run on fuel here in Florida with panic buying on the east coast and the stations here are out of everything except regular.
It’s crazy times here. I know when the tanks at the station get super low you’ll get bad gas from the bottom of the tank.
It happens in Colorado when they switch from winter to summer fuel, I’m not sure it’s a nation wide thing.
Here it’s nearly impossible to mix up the actual nozzles at the station.
Im not sure what’s going on but I’ve never had gas that smells strong, I don’t doubt the quality is going to hell along with everything else.

I always felt that U.S.A. gas smelled like Canadian gas (petrol,not bean gas!)used to. Got better mileage too. Haven’t been down there for a few years now. Sunoco was my favourite.

Short of tankers?

Desantis declared an emergency which puts into action a fleet of tankers to supply us from the north.
Could be these tankers are the culprit. Also the stations ran their tanks empty, maybe I got garbage from the bottom of the tank.
Our supply chain/economy is such a house of cards.
If you want to get a glimpse of how fast things will go Mad Max in this country if SHTF , just go to the gas station in Florida before a Hurricane, people lose their minds.
We had one crazy rain event a hundred miles away in a very small area and it disrupted the whole southern part of the state.
The pickups in gas tanks are fixed at the bottom of the tank. You don't get any different gas when the tank is low.

I'm guessing yoiu read this already.

"Gasoline needs to have an octane rating of 87-91 to fit today's car engines. Diesel fuel has an octane rating of 25-40. Mixing 2% diesel fuel into gasoline will lower the overall octane rating by 1 point. Getting 10% diesel contamination lowers octane by 5 points, which is enough to create problems in most engines."

What is teh problem with running low octane?

"This means the fuel needs to be igniting and exploding when the piston is in the right place. But as we just noted, if the gas octane rating is too low, the piston isn't going to be high enough when the explosion happens. And this can cause serious damage to the engine if it happens for a long enough time."

Since you have already run some out, fill up with the highest octanne 100% gasoline you can find, or even better drain the gas and start with the highest octane you can find.

“The primary difference between winter- and summer-blend gas is their Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP). Refiners produce gasoline blends that have a lower RVP which helps reduce the chance of gasoline evaporation in vehicles during the summer. During the summer with higher octane fuel comes an increase in cost, some areas could pay as much as 15 cents more per gallon to fill up their vehicle. Winter blend gasoline has a higher RVP which means it evaporates more and allows gasoline to ignite more easily to start your vehicle during cold temperatures”

How do I know this? One of my good friends was the head mechanic at a large European Auto repair shop for twenty years ( Porsche, Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo) . He’s hands down the best most experienced mechanic I’ve ever known, a Vietnam vet Marine corps Phantom mechanic and master fabricator too. He’s built rods and custom bikes his whole life and is easily the best trouble shooter I know.
He told me invariably every year at the shop he’d get a flood of cars in when the fuel change over happened with bad fuel from the stations running the tanks low. He said in twenty years, bad fuel (ie: water contamination )was the number one issue with poor running cars. I listen to him he’s an authority on the subject.

Why is it that ignorance and smirking incredulity always go hand in hand?

I took that as a joke. As in Sweden isn't too worried about hot weather.
